Dinosaurs, journeys and animal babies give Kensington Primary Academy’s nursery year its own character. These named topics sit within the Primary Knowledge Curriculum, with play, stories and investigation used to introduce children to the world around them. There is a clear emphasis on learning new words and using them in conversation.
The nursery belongs to the primary academy at 205 Warwick Road, London, W14 8PU. For the 2026-27 intake, it has 30 full-time places. Its staffing structure includes a teacher and an LSO, placing the nursery within the school’s teaching and support team.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) combines physical, emotional, language and thinking development. Here, vocabulary is planned across its seven learning areas, with adults helping children use new words independently. The school aims to develop confidence and curiosity through this approach. Learning to explain an idea matters alongside discovering it.
Nursery topics move from All about Me and Journeys to Dinosaurs, then Growing and Changing. Animals and their babies and Heroes and Adventurers follow later in the year. That gives families concrete subjects to talk about at home, rather than an abstract description of early learning.
The Primary Knowledge Curriculum’s early years materials include stories, ideas for play and investigations. Their focus on Understanding the World encourages children to ask questions about themselves and their surroundings. Physical development also involves exploring space and practising small and large movements. Classroom working walls display relevant learning content, providing a visual reference as topics develop.
In November 2024, Ofsted identified an emphasis on language experiences from the early years onwards. Children in early years also took part in educational visits, with theatres, galleries and museums among the examples. These experiences extend learning beyond the classroom.
An hour is allocated for nursery lunch. Children should also bring a water bottle each day, making hydration part of the practical routine.
For children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), the school uses Assess, Plan, Do, Review. Parents, the class teacher and the SEND coordinator work together on individual targets. Support can include classroom help, visual resources and practical objects, with reasonable adjustments for significant individual needs. Speech and language therapy, occupational therapy and educational psychology are among the external services the school may involve.
Families can access parent information sessions and workshops about early learning. School talks also cover routines, emotional regulation and encouraging independence. These give parents ways to connect learning and behaviour at home with the school day.
Attending this nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal Reception admissions process, meeting the applicable deadline. Treat the nursery choice and the Reception application as separate decisions.
When Reception applications exceed the places available, offers follow the school’s oversubscription criteria. Familiarity with the school is therefore distinct from securing admission.
Core nursery hours are 9am to 3pm. The nursery timetable also specifies arrival from 8.30am and registration at 8.45am, with collection at 3pm. These are different parts of the morning schedule, so families should plan around the registration time as well as the core hours.
Nursery charges apply during term time and payments use Arbor; contact the school for current charges. Nursery enquiries go to the registrar and administrator on 0203 146 7870 or kpa@wlfs-primary.org. The building has a lift supporting access for people with disabilities.
