Victorian terraces and Edwardian semis fan out from Wimbledon's town centre across the inter-war suburban estates that cover much of this outer-south London borough, created in 1965 from the Municipal Borough of Wimbledon, the Municipal Borough of Mitcham, and the Merton and Morden Urban District, each formerly within Surrey. Around 215,000 people live across the borough today.

Wimbledon and Merton Park draw families competing for primary and secondary places, with Wimbledon widely regarded as one of Merton's most school-competitive postcodes. The Northern line threads through Colliers Wood and reaches its southernmost point at Morden, while South Western Railway services from Wimbledon arrive at Waterloo in around twenty minutes. Mitcham anchors the south of the borough, and the All England Club brings Wimbledon's name global recognition each July.
