Recorded as Lambehitha in 1062, meaning 'landing place for lambs', Lambeth has grown from a Thames-side parish into one of Inner London's most populous boroughs, home to around 317,000 residents spread across a long southward strip. The South Bank anchors its northern edge, drawing galleries and cultural venues to the riverfront where the Thames defines the boundary with the City of Westminster.
