At a Glance

At the May 2022 inspection, bicycles, hopscotch and an obstacle course gave early learning at West Wimbledon Primary School a physical dimension alongside books and phonics. This is the school’s own nursery provision, so its day belongs within a wider primary-school setting.

Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 24 and 25 May 2022. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating. The nursery-specific detail centres on the introduction of an early-reading programme.

The Nursery Day

Reading begins in Nursery. In May 2022, a new programme extended from Nursery into the school’s later early-reading classes, giving children an introduction to the sounds used in reading. For parents, this places early literacy within the nursery experience rather than leaving it until children move on.

Across early years, children had opportunities to practise phonics during the day. That matters because learning a sound and using it are different steps: opportunities beyond the initial teaching help children put their knowledge to work. Books used for reading practice matched the sounds children had already learned, linking the reading task to their teaching.

Physical learning had a distinct place too. The May 2022 early-years provision included a weekly PE lesson, while the playground provided further opportunities to practise movement. Children rode bicycles, tackled an obstacle course and used climbing equipment; hopscotch added another way to develop physical skills. These are concrete activities for families weighing the balance between early reading and active play. Children were becoming more confident with these playground activities.

Care and Support

Training supported the early-reading programme in May 2022. Staff matched reading practice to taught sounds, giving children work connected to what they had learned rather than an unrelated reading challenge.

Safeguarding arrangements across the school were effective in May 2022. Staff and governors received regular training during the year, and leaders supplied weekly updates and quiz questions. Concerns were passed to the safeguarding team for a prompt response. These are school-wide arrangements relevant to the nursery’s place within the school.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the applicable deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as separate decisions.

The practical implication is straightforward: attending this nursery should not be treated as confirmation of a later school place. Enjoying the nursery day and securing Reception admission are different matters, and the application still needs attention.
