At a Glance

At the November 2024 inspection, a mud kitchen and fruit-and-vegetable growing gave Columbia Market Nursery School's play a practical purpose: children explored the natural world while learning to talk and work together. This is a state nursery school on Columbia Road in Bethnal Green, with an age range of two to five. Its identity is early education itself, rather than a nursery class within a primary school.

At the November 2024 inspection, children were settled, confident and absorbed in their activities. That gives families a concrete picture of the provision: relationships with adults support children as they learn to participate and become more independent.

The Nursery Day

Play shapes the curriculum, indoors and outside. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together movement, communication and emotional development with early reading, mathematics, creative expression and understanding the world. In parent language, learning includes getting along with others, expressing ideas and testing how things work, alongside developing early academic skills.

Children have time to pursue their interests, with adults observing their play and supporting the next learning steps. In November 2024, inspectors recorded gardening and mud-kitchen activities that made exploration tangible. Songs, storytelling and rhymes supported early language and literacy; visits to neighbourhood spaces extended learning beyond the nursery. Drawing, collage and painting also feature in the children's activities.

Learning progression. In November 2024, some teaching lacked sufficiently clear steps towards curriculum goals. Counting and shape activities sometimes failed to build on earlier understanding, while chances to stretch vocabulary and thinking were missed. The implication is specific: engaging activities need a clearer learning sequence so that children's knowledge develops progressively.

Care and Support

Familiar adults helped children settle at the November 2024 inspection. Staff knew children well, and children established relationships that helped them feel secure. Adults demonstrated ways to respond to feelings and behaviour, supporting children to manage their own reactions.

In November 2024, support involved families as well as children. Staff worked with parents to understand children's interests and existing learning, while parent workshops helped families take part in targeted support. External agencies contributed to language and social development. This connected nursery learning with family involvement for children with additional needs. The safeguarding arrangements were effective in November 2024.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet its deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for the next school place as separate decisions.

The school shares a Social Connect Starting Reception workshop for parents whose child has social communication differences or an autism diagnosis and is due to begin Reception in September. Delivered online through Microsoft Teams, it covers preparing the child and school, adapting to a new routine and using visuals. This is practical preparation, separate from admission entitlement.

Practical Information

An extended day forms part of the provision. Nursery tours can be booked through the school office, giving families a direct way to explore whether the setting suits their child.

For nursery applications, children can join the waiting list after their second birthday. Collect the form from the office between 10:00am and 1:00pm, Monday to Friday, bringing a birth certificate and address evidence. Accepted documents include a bank statement, driving licence, council tax document or utility bill. Contact the office on 020 7739 4518 or email admin@columbiamarket.towerhamlets.sch.uk.
