At a Glance

Naan, brioche and pitta give a flavour of nursery life at Culloden: an Around the World topic included tasting bread and discussing its countries of origin. Everyday experiences become material for learning.

The nursery belongs to Culloden Primary Academy on Dee Street in Poplar. For 2025/2026, provision was for 90 children aged 3 and 4. That is nursery capacity, rather than the size of an individual class. Ofsted graded the school's early years provision Outstanding following its inspection on 10 and 11 June 2025. This judgement covers early years within the school.

The Nursery Day

Learning combines practical exploration with an ordered curriculum. In June 2025, early years teaching used carefully selected materials and purposeful exchanges between adults and children. Outdoors, adults helped children judge manageable risks while building movement skills. The outdoor learning area therefore serves a clear educational purpose, rather than simply providing a break from classroom activity.

The early years foundation stage (EYFS) learning here includes number, creative work, physical development and relationships. Maths Mastery introduces patterns, sorting, shapes and early number ideas. Painting, collage and self-portraits give children different ways to represent their ideas. Jigsaw provides topics about relationships, health and belonging, connecting learning with children's lives.

Nursery-specific activities make that practical approach tangible. During Around the World, children sampled baguette, croissants and other breads, then talked about where they came from. Monday show-and-tell gives children opportunities to explain an object brought from home. A class teddy also goes home with a selected child on Fridays, with its diary shared afterwards. These activities connect conversation in class with experiences beyond it.

Rhymes and stories were a source of enthusiasm among early years children in June 2025. Together with the practical activities, they give language a place throughout learning.

Care and Support

Children formed affectionate bonds with adults and adjusted readily to early years in June 2025. Settling also has practical support: the school's Home School Support Worker helps families with induction, concerns about progress and access to services. The My Child At School app carries news about children and provides a way to maintain contact.

Food arrangements are specific. Lunchtime Co supplies school meals, while families can choose a healthy packed lunch. EYFS children receive milk and fruit. Nuts are excluded and water is the permitted drink. Children with food allergies use a lunchtime lanyard so catering staff and other adults can recognise their needs.

The Deaf Support Base includes nursery children. Its Total Communication approach combines speech, listening, gestures and Sign Supported English, aiming to find effective communication methods for each child. Barts Health NHS Trust speech and language therapists work with the base twice a week. For families considering this provision, communication support is part of the school setting their child would join.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Tower Hamlets' coordinated process, using eAdmissions and meeting the deadline for their child's entry year. For 2025/2026, nursery attendance gave no priority within the Reception oversubscription criteria; the application deadline for that past cycle was 15 January 2025.

Transition activity is separate from allocation. The summer programme included a nursery-to-Reception workshop and a whole-school transition day for meeting the next class teacher. Familiarity can support the change, but it does not secure admission.

Practical Information

Part-time nursery runs from 09:00 to 12:00; full-time attendance runs from 09:00 to 15:00. Full-time children can stay until 15:30 with an additional payment. Ask the school for current charges. Nursery classrooms open at 08:45 for direct drop-off, allowing an earlier start to settling.

For 2025/2026, the coordinated nursery admissions scheme offered part-time places only. Funded education covered 15 hours each week across 38 weeks, beginning in the term following a child's third birthday. Families should distinguish that allocation from the longer attendance option.

Nursery uniform permits grey leggings or jogging bottoms. Second-hand uniform can be requested. For enquiries, email info@cullodenacademy.org or telephone 020 7364 1010.
