A nursery day within a Catholic primary school, with its own weekly family updates and access to care beyond school hours: that is the practical character of Our Lady and St Joseph’s provision in Poplar. The nursery forms part of Our Lady and St Joseph Catholic Primary School at Wades Place, London E14 0DE.
The school aims to give children a Catholic education, with faith shaping school life. Families are expected to support that ethos, so its religious character deserves consideration alongside the daily timetable.
The early years timetable gives the day some clear anchors. Lunch falls between 11.10am and 12.10pm, and the school day ends at 3.15pm for EYFS children. Those fixed points help families understand how learning, lunch and collection fit together.
EYFS means the Early Years Foundation Stage, the framework for children’s learning, development and care before age five. Its foundations include language, physical development and children’s social and emotional development. Mathematics, literacy, understanding the world and creative expression build alongside them. For parents, this means looking beyond early reading alone to how a child communicates, plays and develops independence.
Learning can also extend beyond the classroom. In September 2022, Ofsted recorded early years children taking a seaside trip connected with a travel topic. That example links a classroom theme with a real place children can experience and discuss.
Nursery families receive a weekly update specifically for their child’s stage, alongside the Friday school newsletter. There is also a Meet the Teacher session each academic year and two Parents’ Evenings annually. Together, these give parents regular opportunities to follow learning and discuss their child’s progress. Meetings with the class teacher can be arranged through the school office during the year.
Lunch menus are shared with families, helping parents plan food at home around school meals. For children with additional needs, the inclusion team offers advice about support at home and provides resources for families to use. This gives parents a contact point for discussing how home support can complement their child’s education.
Nursery attendance neither guarantees a Reception place nor gives priority in the Reception allocation. A fresh application is required, with documents submitted again. Treat the two applications separately.
For September 2027 entry, apply through the online admissions system of the local authority where you live by 15 January 2027. Families applying under a faith criterion should also return the Supplementary Information Form and supporting documents to the school by that date. Nursery attendance does not replace either step.
The Early Years Gate is used between 8.40am and 8.50am, with EYFS collection there at 3.15pm. It gives families a specific entrance and collection point to plan around.
Breakfast Club begins at 7.30am, with capacity for up to 24 EYFS pupils. After School Care finishes at 6.00pm and has up to 32 EYFS places. These are shared early years capacities, rather than nursery-only allocations. For nursery enquiries or to arrange a school tour, contact the school on 020 3764 8860.
