African drumming and a daily spell of movement give this small Bethnal Green nursery a distinctive rhythm. Specialist music teaching sits alongside play, conversation and early number work. This is the nursery within St John's Church of England Primary School on Peel Grove, taking children from age three, with around 25 places.
The nursery occupies the school's early-years building, built on part of the playground. Its team includes a nursery teacher and a teaching assistant. Ofsted's report dated 10 February 2026 judged the school's early-years provision to be Strong standard. That judgement covers the early years together, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Development Matters guides the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum. In parent language, this brings together learning to communicate, manage feelings and relationships, and move confidently, alongside early literacy, mathematics, creative expression and discovering the world. Children explore through play and tackle problems through interactive activities. The approach allows learning to develop at each child's level rather than expecting everyone to move at the same pace.
Conversation does substantial teaching work here. In February 2026, adults used exchanges with children to introduce vocabulary, demonstrate ways of communicating and respond to individual needs. Learning followed a deliberate sequence, with checks helping staff decide what to teach next. Early mathematics included counting and reasoning, supported by adults showing children how to approach activities. These are foundations children can practise through doing and talking.
Outdoor learning extends the work indoors: children have opportunities to explore, develop movement skills and use number and writing outside. The playground also hosts the Daily Mile. Nursery children join classmates for 15 minutes of walking, jogging or running each day, with participation rather than competition as the focus.
THAMES (Tower Hamlets Arts & Music Education Service) supplies specialist teachers for African drumming in Nursery. This gives music a specific place in the provision, alongside the curriculum's opportunities for creative activity.
Settling rests on relationships with families. In February 2026, close cooperation with parents helped children become comfortable quickly and learn familiar routines. Staff interactions were attentive to children's needs, making communication part of care as well as teaching. For a young child, the practical benefit is support with both understanding the day and taking part in it.
Shared dining is also a learning routine. Early-years children eat in a family-style arrangement that develops independence and social habits. Lunchtime gives them opportunities to encounter unfamiliar foods, practise conversation and learn considerate behaviour around a table. Meals contribute to the day beyond eating.
Children with special educational needs and/or disabilities received support that enabled them to participate fully in early-years learning in February 2026. The school's SEN process involves parents throughout and includes termly reviews. Families can contact the SENCO through the school email address, giving them a direct route into discussions about support.
Attending this nursery does not guarantee a Reception place at St John's. Nursery admission and Reception admission are separate: families must apply again through the normal Reception admissions process and meet its deadline. Treat the nursery choice and the later school application as two distinct decisions.
