Nursery at Stepney Greencoat Church of England Primary School

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.

At a Glance

Thirty nursery places within a Church of England primary school give Stepney Greencoat’s provision its scale and setting. The nursery class is based at the school on Norbiton Road in Limehouse. For the 2026/27 intake, the application form specifies children born between 1 September 2022 and 31 August 2023.

Full-time attendance is the intended pattern, with morning places also considered. That distinction matters for families choosing between a shorter session and a full nursery day.

The Nursery Day

Free play and language development feature in the school’s November 2022 SEND information report: adults support children’s communication during early-years play. This connects children’s own activity with opportunities to develop speech and understanding.

The early years foundation stage (EYFS) also includes learning to participate alongside other children. In February 2023, children practised listening, sharing turns and treating friends kindly. These are practical skills for joining a group and taking part in learning together.

Ofsted graded the school’s early-years provision Good at the inspection on 22 and 23 February 2023. This is an early-years judgement within the school inspection, rather than a separate nursery rating.

Care and Support

Settling begins before the first session. The nursery admission policy provides for a summer New Parents meeting once places are confirmed, and a familiarisation visit for children who are new to the school. Families therefore have an opportunity to introduce their child to the setting before attendance begins.

For additional needs, the school uses Assess, Plan, Do, Review: staff consider a child’s needs, agree support with parents, put it into practice and review its impact. Parents of children on the SEND register are invited to review meetings and receive a termly progress report through this process. Support is something families help shape.

School support includes a Nurture Space for individual work beyond the classroom, alongside partnerships with the Phoenix Outreach Team and speech and language therapists. These are school-wide resources; their relevance to an individual nursery child depends on that child’s needs. The SEND coordinator can be contacted through the main office.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. It also confers no priority under the school’s 2026/27 Reception admission arrangements. Families must make a separate application through eAdmissions and complete the school’s supplementary paperwork, including the foundation information where relevant.

For September 2026 entry, the application deadline was 15 January 2026. That cycle has passed; the date belongs to that intake and should not be treated as the deadline for a nursery child’s later application.

Transition and allocation are separate matters. The school’s behaviour policy provides for sessions with the next teaching team before the year finishes, together with staff handover meetings. Familiarity with adults can support the move, but does not change the admission criteria.

Practical Information

Attendance pattern. Part-time places are morning sessions each day. The nursery policy gives preference to full-time applicants eligible for full-time funding before considering part-time requests, so the shorter pattern is subject to that allocation order.

Full-time requests. For the 2026/27 nursery cycle, council offers were for part-time places; families wanting full-time attendance had to request it from the school. Additional attendance could be chargeable where the family did not qualify for government funding for the extra 15 hours. Contact the office for current charges.

Enquiries go to 020 7987 3202 or office2@stepneygreencoat.towerhamlets.sch.uk. Prospective families can also request a school tour through the admissions-page form; the office then arranges a date. Children may join the tour under their adult’s supervision.

FAQs

The nursery admission policy provides for 30 children each September.

Part-time places are morning sessions each day. They are considered after preference has been given to full-time applicants who qualify for full-time funding.

No. Nursery attendance neither guarantees a place nor gives priority under the 2026/27 Reception arrangements. A separate Reception application is required.

After admission is confirmed, parents are invited to a summer New Parents meeting. Children new to the school can have a familiarisation visit before starting.

Complete the school-tour form on the admissions page. The office will contact you with a date, and children can attend with adult supervision.
