Nursery at Stewart Headlam Primary School

Two schools share one nursery here, with language development a clear thread through the early learning. Stewart Headlam and Hague's Federation Nursery operates at Hague Primary School on Wilmot Street, Bethnal Green, E2 0BP. For families considering Stewart Headlam, that means planning the nursery journey around Hague's site.
The provision serves three-year-olds. At Stewart Headlam's inspection on 18 and 19 July 2023, Ofsted judged early years provision Outstanding within the school's inspection, rather than awarding a separate nursery rating.
Parents can join their child for the opening ten minutes through Stay and Play, sharing play or helping with name writing. It gives families a small, practical part in the day. The morning timetable runs from 09:00 to 12:00.
The Early Years Foundation Stage, or EYFS, puts communication and children's development alongside learning. In July 2023, adults gave particular attention to helping children develop language and communication, adjusting teaching in response to developmental needs. Children worked together, sustained their attention and persisted with difficulties. Those are useful foundations for joining activities and expressing what they need.
Hague has an Early Years Playground, and its classrooms have acoustic adaptations for deaf and partially hearing children. The federation's SEND policy explains that these adaptations also improve listening conditions for other children. This is a physical feature with a direct connection to the nursery's emphasis on communication.
Settling begins before the nursery day becomes familiar. EYFS staff arrange home visits, Stay and Play sessions and information for parents as children move from home or another preschool setting. Hague's Toy Library runs one afternoon a week, offering another way for families with infants to become familiar with the school.
An assessment when children join Nursery helps staff identify their starting points. Regular EYFS parent meetings give families opportunities to discuss development, while the teaching team provides personal care for early years children who need it. Parents can raise concerns first with the class teacher; the federation's SENCo and Inclusion Manager coordinates additional support across both primary schools.
For children with hearing loss, Hague's Deaf Resource Base includes specialist support from qualified Teachers of the Deaf and learning support assistants. Its approach develops spoken communication through hearing, supported by hearing aids or cochlear implants; it does not provide signed teaching. Families should consider that communication approach when assessing whether the provision suits their child.
Physical access. Hague's ground floor is accessible for people with mobility difficulties, but the building cannot currently be made fully accessible. Families needing step-free access should take that limitation into account.
Attending the Federation Nursery does not guarantee a Reception place at Stewart Headlam or Hague. Parents must make a separate application through the normal admissions route. For Tower Hamlets residents, that route is eAdmissions; the deadline for September 2026 entry was 15 January 2026. Children with an Education, Health and Care Plan follow the SEN Team route instead of applying online.
Transition work connects the shared nursery with each school's Reception class. That preparation is separate from the decision about allocating a place.
Session planning. The timetable specifies morning-only places, subject to Tower Hamlets nursery admissions criteria. The school also describes full-time provision for eligible families, so families should resolve the session pattern before organising childcare around it.
The federation's 2025-2026 SEND policy sets out 15 universal funded hours for three-year-olds, with a further 15 hours for families meeting DfE eligibility criteria. Tower Hamlets describes nursery-class attendance as taking place during school term. For nursery enquiries, contact Hague's office on 020 7739 9574. Open sessions are advertised for November, December and January.
The shared Stewart Headlam and Hague Federation Nursery is based at Hague Primary School, Wilmot Street, Bethnal Green, E2 0BP.
The nursery timetable gives 09:00 to 12:00 and specifies part-time morning places. Full-time provision is also described for eligible families on the admissions page, so resolve the pattern before making childcare arrangements.
EYFS staff plan home visits, Stay and Play sessions and information for parents. The nursery also invites parents to spend the first ten minutes playing with their child or helping with name writing.
No. Parents must apply separately for Reception. Tower Hamlets residents use eAdmissions, while children with an EHCP follow the SEN Team route.
Hague's Deaf Resource Base has qualified Teachers of the Deaf, learning support assistants and acoustically adapted classrooms. Its teaching approach uses spoken language and hearing; signed teaching is not provided.
