Nursery at Wellington Primary School

Songs, rhymes and shape exploration give Wellington’s nursery its character: language and early mathematics woven into children’s learning. Jade Class is the nursery provision within Wellington Primary School in Bow, with nursery class teachers and nursery nurses listed in the staff team. Children can join in the term after turning three, with September, January and April intakes.
For the September 2025 admissions cycle, Wellington described 50 part-time places and up to 10 full-time places for eligible children. At the inspection on 7 and 8 December 2023, Ofsted graded early years provision Outstanding. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) gives the learning its breadth. Wellington’s seven areas bring together language, physical skills and emotional development with early reading and writing, mathematics, exploring the world and creative expression. For a parent, this means learning includes how children communicate and cooperate as well as what they know.
Early reading begins with Phase 1 pre-reading work in Nursery, using the THE Partnership Phonics Programme. In December 2023, songs, rhymes and everyday routines helped children build their spoken language. Staff also guided nursery children through the characteristics of two-dimensional shapes. These are concrete beginnings for later reading and mathematical understanding.
Outdoor activity forms part of the Foundation Stage day rather than a separate playtime break. Across the school, learning spaces include a sensory outdoor garden and individual reading spaces. The grounds are wheelchair accessible, with some play equipment designed for children to use together. Those physical arrangements matter for participation, especially when a child needs adaptations.
Starting school includes support for the family. Wellington’s induction programme runs through a child’s first four weeks and is led by the Senior Inclusion Officer. Home or previous-setting visits and meetings with relevant agencies can form part of preparation; more vulnerable children can have a gradual start when needed, planned and reviewed with parents.
Parents are encouraged to speak with the class teacher, especially for younger children and new starters. Termly parent conferences provide another opportunity to discuss progress. For children with SEND, termly reviews bring parents into decisions about targets and support. The school purchases specialist input from speech and language therapists, educational psychologists and autism consultants, giving staff routes to advice beyond the classroom.
Full-time nursery children receive a meal through the governing body’s meal provision. Nursery children also participate annually in the NHS Flouride Varnish Scheme, delivered by Kent Community Health NHS Foundation Trust. In December 2023, early years children were learning to recognise feelings, understand others, cooperate and wait their turn: useful foundations for sharing a classroom.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the e-admissions portal, including when their child already attends Wellington’s nursery. Tower Hamlets sets the admission arrangements.
For September 2025 entry, the application deadline was 15 January 2025. That is a past admissions cycle. Keep the Reception application separate from nursery attendance and follow the normal application route and deadline for your child’s year of entry.
Morning Nursery runs from 8.45am to 11.45am; Afternoon Nursery runs from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. Foundation Stage children are collected from their classrooms, making the collection point part of the daily routine.
The nursery funding model is term time: 15 funded hours each week over 38 weeks, beginning in the term after a child’s third birthday. The September 2025 arrangements offered part-time places first; families could then request full-time provision from the school, subject to eligibility and available places. Plan around that condition before relying on a longer day.
