Storytelling and outdoor exploration give Ark King Solomon Academy’s nursery its character. Children tell stories of their own, listen to others and explore nature, bringing language and movement into their early learning.
Children can start on their second birthday, with separate provision for two-year-olds and a preschool for ages three to four. The nursery occupies the Younger Years Site on Crompton Street, London, W2 1ND. For September 2026, there were 72 preschool places, with about 30 expected to go to children already attending the younger provision. Those figures describe that entry cycle, rather than current vacancies.
Ofsted judged early years provision Outstanding at the inspection on 5 and 6 December 2023. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Stories provide a clear thread through the curriculum. Alongside the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), the framework for learning and development before age five, children practise telling their own stories and listening to someone else’s. This gives speaking and listening a concrete purpose: children contribute ideas as well as hear them.
Outdoor learning involves exploring nature and developing movement skills. The Younger Years Site has a purpose-built early years outdoor play environment, giving this part of the curriculum a physical setting. Language and physical development both have a place in the nursery’s approach.
In December 2023, nursery children were developing the habits needed to concentrate on learning. Routines established from the beginning of early years helped children engage with their learning. These are useful foundations for taking part in a group and sustaining attention, alongside the storytelling curriculum.
Parents are invited to spend the beginning of the day with their child in the nursery classroom. That creates an opportunity to share the start of the session before leaving. Early Years Practitioners work with Senior Early Years Practitioners, the Head of Early Years and the SENCO, connecting daily support with the wider early years team.
For children needing additional help, the school uses Assess, Plan, Do, Review cycles to decide on targeted or specialist support. Concerns and proposed steps are shared with parents, and progress is reviewed each term. The Parents’ Listen Share Group also meets termly, giving families of children with additional needs a forum to exchange experiences.
Paid-place children arrive having eaten breakfast. Lunch can extend a funded morning, while lunch is included in the two-year-old 30-hour funded school-day arrangement. Families should check current charges with the school when choosing extra provision.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. For September 2027 entry, attendance is not an oversubscription criterion, so families must make a separate application through the normal admissions round. Choosing the nursery should therefore be a decision about the early years experience itself.
Westminster residents apply through Westminster City Council; families living elsewhere apply through their home local authority. The deadline for September 2027 entry is 15 January 2027. Keep that application separate from nursery bookings and payments.
Places operate during school terms. Eligible families can take funded provision of 15 or 30 hours. The 15-hour morning arrangement runs Monday to Friday, with arrival between 8am and 8.30am and collection at 11.15am; a paid lunch extension ends at 12.15pm. Eligible children taking the 30-hour arrangement attend five days, from 8.15am to 3pm.
Paid options finish at 11.15am, 12.15pm, 3pm or 5.30pm. These are regular bookings for three, four or five days: three-day attendance is Tuesday to Thursday, while a four-day pattern omits Monday or Friday. Additional afternoons are booked for a half term. The pattern matters as much as the finishing time when matching nursery to family working hours.

For lunchtime collection of two-to-three-year-olds, use Park Place Villas and collect from the classroom; the Crompton Street entrance cannot be used for that collection.
