At a Glance

A mini-beast hotel, a children’s garden and early storytelling give this nursery its character: learning starts with things children can explore, handle and talk about. St Mary's Bryanston Square CofE School has a Nursery class within its Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), with teaching that combines activities guided by adults and ideas initiated by children.

Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Outstanding at the inspection on 4 and 5 May 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery. Planning for young children was exceptionally strong, with an emphasis on preparing them for further learning and helping them develop resilience and ambition.

The Nursery Day

Play supplies much of the working material. Adults plan topics and respond to children’s interests, so an individual fascination can become the starting point for an activity. The EYFS brings together language, physical development and social skills with early reading, mathematics, creative work and exploration of the world. For parents, that means learning extends beyond a seated lesson.

Letters and Sounds is the named phonics programme. Nursery children play with sounds, practise making marks and begin forming letters and writing their names. Storytelling and putting events in order build the foundations for reading. Counting also happens through play, with children learning to recognise numerals and put numbers up to 10 in sequence.

The physical spaces give those ideas somewhere to go. A sand pit, water tray and Bryanston Cafe support exploration of measurement, weight and capacity. Outdoors, the mini-beast hotel and children’s garden provide opportunities to investigate living things; children also use the shared Edible Playground. Learning takes place outside as well as inside each day.

Bikes and equipment for balancing and climbing support larger movements, while Nursery has a PE lesson each week. Group games introduce kicking, catching and throwing through taking turns. Creative activities include making things, role-play, music and dance, and nursery children participate in the nativity. Church of England life is part of the rhythm too: EYFS has weekly RE and a weekly worship visit from St Mary’s Church.

Care and Support

Settling begins through induction sessions, with routines and structure helping children adjust to being away from their families. Adults support relationships with peers and teachers; children who find interaction harder receive additional help through guided play and interventions. This gives social learning a practical place in the day.

Parents can participate through workshops, parents’ evenings and morning story-sharing sessions. Topic activities also invite families to contribute their cultures, work or interests. Target Tracker records observations and photographs of learning, with assessment information shared with parents and used to plan subsequent activities.

Language support is a specific thread. Staff work with the Speech and Language Service, model vocabulary and provide individual interventions. Colourful Semantics helps children construct sentences, including those learning English as an additional language. Curriculum planning includes children with special educational needs and/or disabilities, so activities are intended to accommodate different starting points.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process by its applicable deadline.

Classroom familiarity is a separate benefit. Nursery children learn alongside the next class through joint working, building relationships while pursuing their own interests. That supports continuity in children’s experience; it does not secure an admission offer.
