Nursery at Gunton Primary Academy

One nursery class gives Gunton Primary Academy’s youngest children their own place within its early years provision. Catering for children aged three and four, the nursery belongs to the school on Gainsborough Drive in Lowestoft. Its staffing includes a nursery teacher and a nursery learning support assistant, within a wider early years team led by an Early Years Lead. This is a classroom-based start to school life, with nursery staff roles distinct from those elsewhere in the academy.
Learning follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), with a nursery long-term plan organising learning across the year. Medium-term planning adds the detail: the content of learning units and how the different areas of the early years curriculum will be addressed. For parents, that means the nursery’s learning has a planned sequence, rather than being described only through individual activities.
Language is a concrete teaching focus. At the April 2024 inspection, Ofsted identified early years teaching that develops the vocabulary children need to think about their surroundings and discuss them. The practical emphasis is on giving children words with which to express and explore ideas. That matters before formal schoolwork: being able to explain a thought is itself part of learning.
Beyond classroom planning, an EYFS Sports Day took place on 1 July 2025. It provides a specific example of an organised event for the early years children, alongside their curriculum learning.
A nursery teacher and nursery learning support assistant form the nursery’s identified classroom team. The wider early years staffing also includes a learning support assistant with a speech and language role. Together, these roles distinguish general classroom support from a specific focus on communication.
Across the academy, the support structure includes a SENDCo, a Family Support Advisor and a Thrive Practitioner. An inclusion, welfare and behaviour lead also holds the designated safeguarding role. These are school-level roles, so they describe the wider team around the nursery rather than a separate nursery service. For families, the distinction helps clarify the different responsibilities within that team.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application directly to Suffolk County Council by 15 January. Choosing this nursery and applying for the next stage are separate decisions.
Suffolk County Council communicates the application outcome. The academy then contacts families about school information and transition arrangements. That sequence separates the allocation decision from the school’s subsequent preparations for a child’s start.
The nursery’s school address is Gainsborough Drive, Lowestoft, NR32 4LX. Enquiries can be made by calling 01502 584661, and the school also has a contact form. These give families direct routes into the academy when considering its nursery provision.
