Nursery at Warren School

Play and communication meet in Warren School’s early years provision. In November 2024, vocabulary teaching was closely connected to children’s play, giving new words an immediate purpose. Positive relationships also helped children settle. These are useful foundations for children whose learning and care require individual attention.
The nursery belongs to Warren School in Oulton Broad, Lowestoft. Warren provides specialist education: its pupils with profound and multiple learning difficulties span ages 3–19, while provision for severe learning difficulties covers ages 4–19. All pupils have an education, health and care plan (EHCP). Ofsted graded early years provision Good following the inspection on 26 and 27 November 2024.
Early reading starts in the early years foundation stage (EYFS), with daily phonics. Jolly Phonics teaches sounds and how to combine them into words. The important qualification is that phonics is not the route for every child: reading also uses symbols, signs and frequently encountered words. Books can be adapted with audio, large print or picture communication, allowing children to engage through a format suited to their needs.
Play has a clear language purpose. In November 2024, adults matched vocabulary to early years children’s play, linking language with what children were doing.
Across Warren, learning takes account of EHCPs, personal learning plans, behaviour plans and independence. For children with PMLD, Warren uses the Equals Pre-formal Curriculum model. Warren describes personal care and physical or medical interventions as part of that individual learning programme. Comfort and readiness to engage belong together.
The wider school site is on one level, with no steps. That is a concrete consideration for families supporting a child with physical access needs.
Relationships helped early years children become comfortable in their new surroundings in November 2024. After a place is offered, Warren discusses introductory visits for the child, providing an opportunity to become familiar with the setting before starting.
School support includes occupational therapy, physiotherapy, and speech and language therapy. Occupational therapy addresses matters such as personal care, positioning and sensory needs; speech and language therapists can advise on eating and swallowing difficulties. Input depends on the individual child, and pupils do not automatically receive every service.
Lunch is prepared at school. Children can have a hot dish or salad, with fruit included, and dietary requirements can be accommodated. Evidence for Learning records children’s learning and lets families contribute examples from home. Arbor carries messages and emails, giving parents a separate channel for everyday communication.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Treat Reception placement as a separate process: Warren’s admissions route is through the local authority, with specialist placement informed by professional advice and the child’s EHCP.
Transition support is a separate practical matter. Warren aims to introduce children to their next adults and uses classroom visits where needed. Additional visits, photographs, social stories or transition packs can support an individual move, with parents involved early.
Enquiries go to the school office on 01502 561893 or office.warren@consortiumtrust.org.uk. Prospective parent and carer tours can be booked. Groups have a maximum of 15 people, and children cannot attend, so families need to arrange childcare for the tour.
The school uniform combines a royal blue cardigan or sweatshirt with a white or sky blue polo shirt and navy, grey or black trousers or skirt. Clothing should carry the child’s name. A car park is available at the Clarkes Lane site.
