On the west bank of the Lymington River where it meets the Solent, Lymington is a harbour town in Hampshire's New Forest district, looking south to Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight. Three marinas and a Wightlink car ferry service define the waterfront, and the town's tourist trade draws on the adjacent New Forest as much as the estuary. A major yachting centre. Sway and Hordle extend the residential spread into New Forest villages to the north.
Pennington, the civil parish adjoining the town, is among the most sought-after pockets for school catchments in this part of Hampshire. Around 14,000 people live across the two parishes, with the Lymington Branch Line running to Brockenhurst, where South Western Railway services reach Southampton in around thirty minutes.
