Learning through play has its own identity here: the Lighthouse Curriculum shapes the nursery's early years provision, with plans adapted to the children in each cohort. South Baddesley welcomes nursery children from age 3. This is the school's own nursery, on the school site in South Baddesley, near Lymington.
The wider setting gives it a distinctive backdrop. School grounds within the Pylewell Estate include a meadow, pond, large field and developing farm. These are shared school features, giving families a concrete sense of the surroundings in which the nursery sits.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the framework for the Lighthouse Curriculum. In parent language, the emphasis is on building learning and play skills, with teaching decisions shaped by children's development and individual needs. The nursery's curriculum can change between cohorts rather than following an identical plan each year.
Creative exploration forms part of this approach. Early years art connects making with physical skills and personal and social development, so creativity sits alongside other aspects of children's learning rather than standing alone.
Songs, rhymes and stories are a clear nursery feature. In June 2024, nursery children were absorbed by these shared activities. The curriculum also had a planned sequence beginning in nursery, with learning divided into steps that build knowledge and skills over time. That gives the play and storytelling a learning purpose.
Starting nursery includes settling sessions and close contact with parents. This gives families a way to share concerns while children become familiar with their new setting. Communication also includes informal conversations and the Friday Bulletin; Google Classroom accounts carry weekly learning updates and resources.
Additional needs have an identified route for support. The inclusions team includes an EYFS SEND lead, and families can raise concerns with their child's teacher or arrange a SENCo meeting through the office. Where a personalised plan is needed, Individual Education Plans bring parents into setting targets, with termly reviews of support and progress.
Lunch offers a practical choice: bring a packed lunch or book a charged school meal through Arbor. Meal bookings require account credit, and sickness absence does not attract a meal charge.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Hampshire County Council. For September 2027 entry, the deadline is midnight on 15 January 2027.
There is a specific, limited admissions advantage for that cycle: out-of-catchment children who are both registered with and attending the school-run nursery qualify under oversubscription criterion 8. This sits below the out-of-catchment sibling criterion. The school must confirm both registration and attendance, and distance ranks applicants if that category itself is oversubscribed. Priority is conditional; it is not a promised place.
Nursery applications go directly to the school. The application form asks for a preferred starting month and days of attendance. Enquiries and visit bookings can be made through the contact form, by emailing adminoffice@southbaddesley.hants.sch.uk or by calling 01590 626243.
Universal funding covers 15 hours during term time from the term after a child's third birthday. Eligible working parents can apply for extended funding totalling 30 hours, supplying their code and checking continued eligibility at least every three months. Funding forms must meet the nursery's deadline; otherwise, families may be invoiced for their hours.
Funding calendar. The nursery opens for 39 weeks, while funding covers 38. Funded families therefore receive an invoice for at least one week across the academic year. Additional unfunded hours are charged, with payments handled through Arbor; contact the school for current charges.
Booking commitments. After a place is confirmed, withdrawing or delaying the start incurs a charge equivalent to one month's fees for the agreed attendance pattern. Leaving nursery requires at least one month's written notice. Families should factor these commitments into their childcare plans.
