At a Glance

Messy play and quiet corners give Maldon Court’s youngest children two different ways to explore. Nursery serves ages 1–3, followed by Pre-Reception for ages 3–4, at the independent school on Silver Street in Maldon. The Pre-Prep limit is 20 children; that is distinct from the whole school’s capacity.

The registered nursery provision received a good overall judgement from ISI at its 9 to 11 September 2025 inspection, with outstanding behaviour and attitudes. Those judgements belong to the early years provision, rather than providing an overall school grade.

The Nursery Day

Play supplies the starting point. Children can dress up, tackle puzzles, experiment with messy materials or retreat to a quiet corner. Role play gives them opportunities to practise social interaction, while games and practical tasks develop coordination. In Pre-Reception, exploration and discussion sit alongside increasingly structured activities, introducing a different rhythm as children grow older.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings learning and care together: communication, physical development, relationships, early reading and mathematics all matter. Nursery activities connect with a monthly topic and children’s interests. Staff assess children when they start and continue observing their development, using what they learn to plan subsequent activities. Specialist teaching in Music and Physical Education extends to nursery children.

Language receives close attention. In September 2025, staff helped children extend conversations and learn unfamiliar words through explanations and discussion during activities. Threading beads onto laces encouraged persistence as well as fine motor control. Indoors, children used apparatus; outside, tyres and logs provided climbing challenges. Movement has a practical purpose here, building physical confidence through active play.

Individual attention. In September 2025, group teaching was not consistently adjusted to each child’s learning needs. Younger children still developing speech joined activities such as naming calendar information. Families should consider how group activities will suit their child’s current stage of communication.

Care and Support

Pre-Reception uses a paired and shared key worker arrangement, linking children, families and staff. Before nursery entry, children complete an induction visit with their family. A manager leads the nursery practitioner team, while Pre-Reception has its own manager and practitioner.

In September 2025, children formed close relationships with staff and were emotionally settled. Stories and an emotion board helped them communicate feelings, giving adults a way to spot when support was needed. Stay-and-play sessions, family celebrations and parents’ evenings brought parents into nursery life; staff also shared updates about activities and development. However, quieter or younger children sometimes received less opportunity to participate because more confident peers dominated, and staff did not consistently recognise their need for help.

Meals and snacks supported healthy eating, alongside hygiene routines and growing independence in personal care. All early years staff had paediatric first aid training. Additional needs were recognised and addressed promptly in the early years, and nursery leadership worked with parents and professionals to maintain continuity of care. Safeguarding in the registered provision was effective in September 2025, supported by staff training and checks on adults joining the team.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Successful completion of Pre-Reception, together with adherence to the terms and conditions, gives children first priority for entry to the main preparatory school. That conditional priority is different from automatic admission.

Reception admission is a separate process: families apply directly to the school for their chosen entry point. Assessment and the school’s ability to meet a child’s needs form part of the admissions process. For the practical transition, Pre-Reception operates through sessions but encourages full-day attendance to help children become accustomed to longer days. Preparation and admission remain separate questions.

Practical Information

Morning, afternoon and all-day sessions are offered, with lunch included in the all-day option. Pre-Reception requires a minimum of three days for 36 weeks of the year. Each session must last at least two and a half hours, with attendance limited to eight hours per day within school opening times. For 2026–2027, the school participates in the 15-hour FEEE scheme for children aged 3–5, allowing parents to claim up to 15 hours through the school. It is not participating in the extended 30-hour scheme for that academic year. Lunch can also be booked separately, and wraparound care carries an additional nursery and Pre-Reception supplement. Contact the school for current charges.

Term-time wraparound care runs from 7.30am to 6pm, Monday to Friday. Nursery and Pre-Reception bookings require 48 hours’ notice so staffing can be arranged; tea requires 24 hours’ notice. Collection from after-school care involves speaking to the supervisor and signing out, with recent photographs required for authorised collectors. To arrange a visit, contact the office on 01621 853529 with preferred dates and times.
