A morning, an afternoon or a full school day: Acacias’ nursery gives families different ways into school life in Burnage, Manchester. Children join in September before their fourth birthday. The nursery forms part of Acacias Community Primary School, with an EYFS lead within the school’s leadership structure.
For the 2025/26 admission cycle, the school listed 30 full-time places, alongside 15 morning and 15 afternoon places. Those numbers could be adjusted to suit school requirements. They describe that past cycle, rather than a fixed allocation for every intake.
The timetable gives the day its clearest shape. Morning nursery children finish at 11.45am, while afternoon children start at 12.15pm. Nursery finishes at 3.15pm, and children attending full time have an hour for lunch. For a child staying all day, lunch therefore has its own substantial place in the timetable.
In July 2023, Ofsted found that children in the early years related positively to others, behaved well and could learn with little disruption from their peers. That matters for the everyday experience of sharing a class: relationships and behaviour leave room for learning.
Additional support draws on the school’s Inclusion team, led by an Inclusion Manager who also serves as SENDCo. Class teachers, teaching assistants and learning support assistants contribute to support, with outside advice sought when necessary. Speech and Language Therapists, an Educational Psychologist and the school’s link nurse are among the contacts available to the school.
The school’s SEND approach starts with close attention to progress and concerns raised by families or staff. Support can include individual help, work in a small group or visual prompts. These are practical ways to make learning accessible, with the support chosen around a child’s needs.
Parents are consulted throughout the staged support process and receive updates about interventions. Each pupil with a special educational need has a One Page Profile covering strengths, difficulties and helpful support; families receive it, and it is reviewed at least twice a year. This gives parents a concrete account of how their child is supported.
Appointments with the class teacher or Inclusion Manager provide another route for discussing progress. Home resources include speech and language activities and advice on sensory needs. The EAL guidance also encourages parents to use the language in which their child feels most confident, including when reading together.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal Reception process. At Acacias, Manchester City Council manages that application, with applications made in the autumn term before entry. Treat choosing nursery and applying for Reception as separate decisions.
The 2025/26 arrangements offered five mornings from 8.45am to 11.45am or afternoons from 12.15pm to 3.15pm. That cycle also allowed a move to full-time attendance for children entitled to free school meals, parents eligible for 30 hours of childcare funding, or parents paying for the additional attendance. Contact the school for current charges.
Nursery applications go to the school office. The waiting-list form should be brought with the child’s passport or birth certificate. For SEND enquiries, families can email sensupport@acacias.manchester.sch.uk.
