Nursery at Briscoe Lane Academy

Stories, songs and conversation give Briscoe Lane Academy’s nursery its clearest character. Children choose books to enjoy at home, while adults model conversation and help them practise taking turns. Shared reading gives families a concrete way to join in.
The nursery belongs to the academy’s early years provision in Newton Heath, Manchester. The academy caters for children aged 3 to 11; this review focuses on its nursery. Nursery teachers work within an EYFS team that also includes teaching assistants and an assistant principal responsible for early years.
Language learning runs through the day. Circle time sits alongside planned speaking and listening activities, with nursery rhymes, poems and songs giving children different ways to hear and use words. Adults introduce vocabulary and concepts deliberately, as well as modelling conversation during their interactions with children. This makes talk part of learning, rather than simply the background to it.
The curriculum begins in the Early Years Foundation Stage, the nursery’s starting stage of education. Learning spaces are designed to prompt language development. The school’s R.E.S.P.E.C.T. approach adds a focus on character, including empathy, communication and teamwork: skills that matter when children are learning to listen and share with others.
Book choice starts in nursery. Teachers guide children towards reading they might enjoy, but children select their own book for pleasure to take home. That gives a shared story at home a starting point in the child’s interests.
In February 2024, Ofsted found that nursery children enjoyed their stories, songs and rhymes, and that these experiences supported the next step in learning to read. This is a specific nursery finding, rather than a separate nursery rating.
Support includes a SENCO and a family support worker, alongside the early years teaching team. The EYFS assistant principal also holds a designated safeguarding role. These roles provide points of contact for learning needs, family concerns and child protection.
Additional support covers communication difficulties, learning needs, sensory and physical needs, and social, emotional and mental health needs. Speech and language therapy can include assessment and recommendations for strategies or programmes. For a child who needs help communicating, that connects directly with the nursery’s emphasis on conversation.
School lunches have a staggered timetable between 11.30am and 1.30pm. The school menu includes vegetarian and halal options, giving families with those dietary requirements relevant meal choices.
A nursery place does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply separately for Reception through the normal application process by the normal deadline. School places are allocated using severe social or medical needs, siblings already attending and straight line distance from home to school; nursery attendance is not among these criteria.
Separate admission. Joining the nursery does not secure the next school place. Families should treat the Reception application as a distinct decision and process.
For early years pupils, the morning class line is at 8.40am, with teachers collecting children from the playground. Contact the school office for nursery enquiries on 0161 681 1783 or at admin@briscoe.manchester.sch.uk. The academy is on Briscoe Lane, Newton Heath, Manchester M40 2TB.
