Rhymes, colour mixing and learning to ride scooters give Cravenwood’s nursery its character: play with clear learning purposes. This is the nursery class within Cravenwood Primary Academy in Crumpsall, Manchester, where children can begin school from age three. The nursery can accept up to 52 children.
Language and independence shape the early years approach. Cravenwood aims to help children become confident learners through play, with opportunities to make choices, solve problems and develop relationships. For parents, the important detail is how those aims translate into activities: sharing stories, extending pretend play and matching objects to numbers.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together communication, social development, movement and early subject learning. Here, continuous provision means learning opportunities children can return to and practise through play. Adult teaching sits alongside that exploration, rather than making the session solely a sequence of lessons.
Nursery learning includes remembering longer stories and developing sentences of four to six words. Children practise hearing rhymes, clapping syllables and identifying matching initial sounds. These are foundations for reading: listening closely to language comes before tackling written words. Read Write Inc. is the named phonics programme used daily across EYFS, with groups organised according to children’s progress.
Number work is concrete. Children sort by shape, colour and size, then connect numerals with quantities up to 5. Movement includes balancing, ball activities and riding bikes, trikes and scooters; pencil work develops grip and control. Pretend play, investigating how things work and experimenting with mixed colours add different ways to explore ideas.
Books also have a physical place. Each classroom has a reading area with poetry, stories and non-fiction, and each class visits the school library at least weekly. Early years children take a book home to share with parents, connecting classroom reading with family time. In March 2023, Ofsted found that early years staff shared books from the start and children enjoyed participating in songs and rhymes.
Direct contact with the nursery team is available through nursery@cravenwoodprimary.org.uk. Across the school, Arbor Parent App supports communication and gives parents access to attendance information, their child’s profile and the calendar. These provide distinct routes for classroom contact and routine administration.
For additional needs, parents can contact the school’s Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator through the office or by telephone. Nursery families also have a Health Visiting Service contact: 0161 202 8750. Safeguarding concerns can be raised with the safeguarding team or another member of staff parents feel comfortable approaching.
School catering is provided by Taylor Shaw, with food prepared in the school kitchens. Its menus follow the School Food Standards and bronze Food for Life standards. For children using school meals, dietary information matters: alternative medical-diet menus are provided whenever safely possible, and catering staff receive annual allergy training.
A nursery place does not guarantee a Reception place. Parents must make a separate application through Manchester City Council’s online school admissions route, meeting the normal application deadline. Nursery attendance does not confer priority within the academy’s oversubscription criteria. Families should therefore treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as separate decisions.
Morning sessions run from 8.30am to 11.30am; afternoons run from noon to 3pm. Both operate Monday to Friday, including Friday afternoons. Drop-off and collection use the Nursery Gate, and children should bring a coat each day.
Nursery applications use an online form, after which the child joins the waiting list. Visits can be arranged through the school office on 0161 795 3380 or info@cravenwoodprimary.org.uk. The school uniform combines a pale blue polo shirt with a navy jumper or fleece and grey trousers, skirt or pinafore; the jumper can be worn with or without the logo.
