Nursery at Crumpsall Lane Primary School

Children’s interests and their home city of Manchester give this nursery its starting points. Activities connect learning with the local community, while adults help children recognise their strengths and build relationships. That gives the provision a personal focus: learning begins with the child and the world they know.
A 39-place nursery classroom forms part of Crumpsall Lane Primary School’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good at its September 2023 inspection. This is an early years judgement within the school inspection, rather than a separate nursery rating.
The EYFS approach combines following children’s interests with helping them understand themselves and relate to other people. For parents, that means the curriculum includes social development alongside learning activities. Adults listen to individual children, and parents are treated as partners in their learning.
Little Big Maths gives number learning a named structure across EYFS. Its A-CLIC framework brings together amounts, counting, number facts and calculation, with progression taking place through play and children’s own discoveries. The practical implication is a planned sequence for mathematical learning that still makes room for exploration.
At the September 2023 inspection, adults combined ambitious expectations with encouragement and clear routines. This helped early years children settle quickly and engage with what staff asked them to do. Positive behaviour and an enthusiastic approach to learning were evident from early years onwards, helping children participate in activities with fewer interruptions.
Encouragement and predictable routines supported settling in during September 2023. The nursery identifies a teaching assistant with a level 3 qualification in children’s care, learning and development. Parents can telephone the school to speak with nursery staff, giving families a direct route for discussing their child.
For additional needs, the school’s SEND approach emphasises intervention at an early stage and working with parents. An appointment with the special educational needs coordinator can be arranged through the office. This gives families a clear starting point for discussing learning, health or emotional concerns.
School catering is provided by Mellors Catering Services. The school menu includes vegetarian dishes, vegetables or salad, and both hot and cold desserts. Families can obtain a menu from the office; specific dietary requirements and allergies should be discussed with the on-site catering manager.
A separate application matters. A nursery place does not guarantee admission to Crumpsall Lane’s Reception. Families must apply online through Manchester City Council by its deadline, described in the admissions guidance as usually falling in January after their child starts nursery. Keep that application separate from the nursery registration process.
Once a Reception place has been allocated, the school arranges transition sessions. Parents and children visit together to meet staff and other children. These sessions support familiarity with the next stage; they take place after allocation.
Nursery registration starts with an application form collected from the school office. Offers are communicated during the spring term before the child is due to begin. Applications are considered under a nursery admissions policy rather than simply in the order they arrive.
For enquiries, contact the office on 0161 740 3741. The nursery is at Crumpsall Lane, Crumpsall, Manchester, M8 5SR.
