At a Glance

Story Bear, mud painting and hills to roll down give Green End’s nursery day its character. This is the school’s own provision in Burnage, Manchester, with two Nursery classes and entry in September following a child’s third birthday. Play and language share the spotlight.

At the inspection on 25 and 26 March 2025, Ofsted rated early years provision Outstanding. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision rather than a separately inspected nursery. Children settled readily into routines, while resources supported learning through exploration and play: useful foundations for children beginning school life.

The Nursery Day

Children choose play for themselves, spend time alongside other children and join adult-led groups to practise particular skills. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) takes practical shape here through play, conversation and learning to look after themselves. Adults participate in play and help children develop their ideas, giving child-led activity a place alongside more focused teaching.

Indoor and outdoor play creates opportunities to practise sharing turns and making friends. Outdoor learning days bring cloud watching, searches for minibeasts and painting with mud; hills add a physical challenge. Nature becomes something children investigate and use, rather than simply a backdrop to play.

Story Bear introduces stories, and songs and shared reading are regular parts of the day. Parents are invited to join story sessions too. These activities develop attention, listening and language together. In March 2025, nursery learning placed a clear emphasis on vocabulary through rhymes, songs and stories, building the language foundation for later reading.

Care and Support

Starting is gradual. Every child builds up their attendance over the first two weeks until they reach their agreed hours. This gives the move into nursery a staged rhythm rather than beginning immediately with the complete timetable. Daily learning also includes managing feelings, personal hygiene and caring for the classroom.

Adults are accessible to parents at both ends of the day. A curriculum update goes home each half term, with homework shared weekly, giving families regular ways to follow learning. For children needing SEN support, teachers use a support plan and share targets each term; parents can also approach the class teacher or inclusion team with concerns.

School lunches are cooked in the on-site kitchen. A three-week menu rotation includes hot meals and halal, vegan and vegetarian choices, providing different dietary options. Packed lunches are also permitted subject to the school’s packed-lunch rules. Contact the school for current meal charges.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Manchester Local Authority, including when their child already attends Green End’s nursery. The online application must meet the nominated January deadline specified for the relevant intake; late applications can affect whether a family obtains its preferred school.

Keep that application separate from the learning preparation happening in nursery. Stories, rhymes and vocabulary work prepare children to begin phonics later. That is an educational foundation, not an admissions promise.

Practical Information

Since September 2026, the standard offer has been 15 hours. Full-time places are restricted to families eligible for the government’s additional 30-hour funding. Families entitled only to 15 funded hours may be able to purchase extra attendance, depending on nursery capacity; ask the school for current charges.

The part-time pattern is fixed in two groups. Group 1 attends Monday and Tuesday for full days, then Wednesday until 11.30am. Group 2 begins on Wednesday at 12.45pm and attends Thursday and Friday for full days. These patterns matter when arranging work and other childcare. EYFS collection is at 3.15pm.

Nursery applications go directly to the school through its nursery application form. School tours can be booked through the office. For enquiries, use admin@greenend.manchester.sch.uk or 0161 432 7036. An Active Uniform trial began in September 2026 for one year; logo clothing is optional, and plain items can be bought from supermarkets.
