At a Glance

Twelve books provide the starting point for learning at Moston Fields nursery, with language given special attention and dedicated outdoor space alongside the classroom. This is the school's own nursery on Brookside Road in Moston, part of its Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).

A January intake, described as Rising Threes, allows children to spend five terms in nursery. The curriculum therefore runs over a two-year cycle. Ofsted judged early years provision Requires Improvement at the inspection on 24 and 25 September 2024; that judgement covers the school's early years, rather than a separately inspected nursery.

The Nursery Day

Books connect the learning here. The nursery curriculum uses twelve selected texts as starting points for different subjects, with communication and language taking priority throughout. Its planning draws on Development Matters and the EYFS Statutory Framework. Themes return with more detail and challenge, so children have opportunities to revisit ideas before tackling something more demanding.

In parent language, the EYFS brings together learning to communicate, move and manage feelings with early reading, numbers, creative expression and discovering how the world works. Cooperation, sharing and growing independence are explicit aims. The classroom and a dedicated outdoor area provide spaces for play and learning; adults are expected to respond to children's interests and individual needs.

Learning quality. In September 2024, activities in early years did too little to develop children's understanding or vocabulary, and progress fell short. Gaps in earlier learning also went unaddressed before new ideas were introduced. Better activity choices and checking what children already understand were required. These are material concerns for parents assessing how the book-based plans translate into everyday teaching.

Care and Support

Partnership with families is part of the EYFS approach. The team shares children's achievements and encourages parents to contribute news about development at home. Across the school, email carries most communications, while Arbor and Class Dojo support updates. Class Dojo also gives parents a route for private messages to the class teacher, making it useful for passing on a concern or a small success.

Starting arrangements are sent to nursery families by email. Parents unsure about their child's start are directed to the office. EYFS class teachers organise the curriculum with the Early Years Lead and headteacher, using assessment and monitoring to adjust provision.

For additional needs, the school's SEND page provides a contact form for the SEND coordinator and links to Manchester's Local Offer. Its Family Support Worker can also discuss education, behaviour and wellbeing concerns, with meetings at home or school. The EYFS approach follows statutory welfare requirements and the school's safeguarding policy.

Moving On to Reception

A nursery place does not guarantee admission to Reception. Families must make a separate application through Manchester City Council. For entry in 2027, the deadline is 15 January 2027. Keep that application separate from any nursery arrangements.

Preparation for the next step includes guidance for families on independence, dressing and toilet training, alongside ideas for sharing books and building communication. These resources offer practical ways to prepare at home. They concern readiness for school, rather than an admissions advantage.

Practical Information

The nursery day runs from 08:45 to 15:15. The school's timing guidance asks children to be settled for learning by 08:55 and stresses punctual collection. That earlier nursery finish matters when planning the afternoon.

To enquire about a nursery place, call the school office on 0161 681 1801 or complete the expression of interest form. Visits can be arranged through the office; the admissions contact is admissions@mostonfields.manchester.sch.uk.

The school uniform guidance lists a red polo shirt, grey trousers or skirt, a blue Moston Fields jumper and black shoes. Velcro shoes are requested unless children can manage their own laces. A book bag and a bottle filled with water are daily essentials under the school guidance.
