Nursery at Mount Carmel RC Primary School

Freddy Fox and Harry Hedgehog bring weekend adventures back to Monday’s snack and chat time. That small ritual captures a distinctive part of Mount Carmel’s nursery life: children’s experiences at home become something to share with their classmates.
The nursery is part of Mount Carmel RC Primary School in Blackley, Manchester, with 39 places. The school’s age range begins at three. Catholic faith shapes the setting’s identity, alongside an early years curriculum combining guided learning and opportunities for children to explore independently.
At the inspection on 5 and 6 November 2024, Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Outstanding. This judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery inspection.
Stories have a daily place. Children hear a selection of five books chosen for each half term, and can pick a lending-library book each week to enjoy with their family. In November 2024, nursery rhymes and singing helped children develop an enjoyment of reading. Books therefore connect classroom routines with time together at home.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together language, movement and social development with early reading, mathematics, creative expression and discovering how the world works. Teaching combines sessions directed by adults with small-group and individual support. Alongside these, children have opportunities to investigate and solve problems independently or with others, indoors and outside. There is room for both adult guidance and children’s own ideas.
Guided activities sit alongside continuous provision, meaning learning opportunities children can explore rather than only tasks led by a teacher. The nursery aims to develop independence through this combination. Waterproof coats, suitable shoes and wellies that can stay at school help children prepare for outdoor learning.
Teaching assistants support the nursery team. In November 2024, children in early years became accustomed to expectations and everyday routines quickly, an encouraging finding for families thinking about their child’s first experience of school.
SeeSaw gives parents a way to send in achievements and experiences from home for discussion during group time. The weekend visits from Freddy Fox and Harry Hedgehog add another connection: families contribute photographs to the toys’ diaries, which are shared during Monday’s snack and conversation session.
Food has also formed part of learning about the world. Nursery children took part in a Chinese Lunch prepared by the school chef. This is a specific example of a food experience, rather than a description of the everyday menu.
For children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), the school welcomes family involvement in understanding their needs. A SEND coordinator provides a contact within the school. Families needing broader support can also reach the Caritas Social Worker through either office.
Separate application. A nursery place does not guarantee admission to Mount Carmel’s Reception class. Families must apply separately through Manchester’s Reception application route, so choosing the nursery and securing a school place are separate decisions.
For the Reception 2026 intake, the application deadline was Thursday 15 January 2026. That date has passed and belongs to that intake only.
Parents can arrange an appointment to visit the school, and the office handles nursery enquiries. Contact the infant office on 0161 205 7131 or email admin@mountcarmel.manchester.sch.uk.
Daily preparation is practical: bring a labelled water bottle, weatherproof clothing and appropriate footwear. Keep spare clothes on the child’s peg, and label clothing and shoes. Wellies may remain at school, reducing what needs to travel home each day.
Mount Carmel offers 39 nursery places.
