Outdoor play gives Oswald Road’s nursery its character: an extensive, recently renovated play area sits alongside plans for Owlets, a separate provision for children aged two and three. This is nursery education within Oswald Road Primary School in Chorlton, Manchester, with different arrangements for its younger children and its established Nursery intake.
Owlets was scheduled to open in September 2026, with up to 42 places. Its planned accommodation is a purpose-built nursery building on one level. For the established Nursery, children normally begin in the September following their third birthday; Rising 3’s entry is also possible in January and after Easter, subject to spaces and having turned three during the preceding term.
Play and exploration shape the plans for Owlets. Open-plan rooms are designed so that children can choose between activities and move around the learning areas. The emphasis is on learning through play, with space designed specifically for this younger age group rather than simply adapting a classroom for older children.
Outside, the plans bring together a nursery playground and a sheltered activity space intended to keep outdoor learning possible through changing weather. Access to the Owl Garden adds a green space for exploring nature. For a parent choosing between settings, these are useful distinctions: outdoor provision includes both space for play and somewhere to investigate the natural world.
Nursery learning follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), the curriculum for the youngest children. Here, play-based exploration sits alongside that framework. In September 2023, children in early years benefited from activities with plentiful language and opportunities to explore the world around them. Those findings concern the early years provision at that time, before the scheduled Owlets opening.
Family relationships are part of the nursery’s approach. Nursery staff aim to work closely with families through transition, while Owlets plans emphasise responding to each child’s needs. That gives parents a useful focus for their early conversations with the team: their child’s interests, communication and adjustment to nursery life.
School support is organised into pastoral care, SEND and safeguarding. Speech and language resources for early years include Ten Tips for Talking and activities supporting vocabulary and spoken instructions, giving families concrete ways to continue communication practice at home. Owlets also has designated safeguarding leads within its nursery team, so safeguarding responsibilities extend specifically to the younger provision.
Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Manchester City Council. Applications open in September and close in mid January; families should follow the council’s exact dates for their application year.
Treat choosing nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions. The school’s intention to support children through transition concerns their adjustment and family relationships. It should not be read as an admissions advantage.
Owlets plans include operation throughout the year, care before and after school, and access to holiday clubs. Those arrangements matter for families whose childcare needs extend beyond the school day. For the established Nursery, children are handed over at the classroom door, which opens at 8:35am.
Availability. For 2026/27, Owlets describes itself as at capacity, with vacancies limited to Mondays and Fridays. Families needing other days should factor that restriction into their plans.
