Prayer, books and early writing give this nursery its clearest character. Part of St Richard's RC Primary School in Longsight, Manchester, it combines the beginnings of literacy with an explicitly Catholic approach to learning. Faith reaches into the ordinary nursery day, rather than being confined to a separate subject.
Ofsted rated the school's early years provision Good following its inspection on 19 and 20 June 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery inspection outcome.
Early learning includes practising pencil grip and encountering authors and their books. These are concrete foundations for writing and an interest in reading: children begin with how to handle a pencil as well as what stories can offer them. The June 2024 early-years findings identify both elements.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is the nursery's early learning stage. Within it, religious education follows Lighting the Path. Catholic social teaching also begins in EYFS through Caritas in Action, with a different theme explored each half term through questions and creative responses. For parents, this means faith is connected to ideas about caring for people and accepting responsibility.
Building the Kingdom adds questions linked to the church year, with themes developing from EYFS onwards. Prayer has practical participation too: younger children help prepare the altar and lead prayers. An EYFS morning prayer and a prayer for the end of the day give these routines a recognisable beginning and ending.
The nursery class has teachers and teaching assistants, giving families a classroom team to work with. Communication across the school includes meetings, newsletters and the website. The nursery page also plans updates to children's photographs each half term, offering another connection between home and classroom activity.
Meals include vegetables and fresh fruit daily, and the food provision explicitly includes nursery children. The school follows Early Years Nutrition Guidance (2025) alongside its food standards. Dietary requirements. Meat served here is not halal, while vegetarian choices use Quorn, including mince, sausages and meatballs. Families should take that distinction into account when considering meals.
For questions about special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), the school's special educational needs coordinator can be reached through the main telephone number. This gives parents a direct contact for discussing their child's needs.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet its deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions.
The admissions page directs parents to Manchester's primary admissions and appeal information. Use that route to check the arrangements for the relevant entry year.
Nursery drop-off uses the dedicated gate on Sutcliffe Avenue between 8.50am and 8.58am, with a staff member on duty. Collection is at 3pm through the same gate. That earlier finish matters when arranging the afternoon pickup.
