Nursery at Wilbraham Primary School

A gradual start leads into full-time nursery life at Wilbraham: children build up their hours during a settling period that usually lasts four weeks. That gives families time to adjust before the full-time pattern takes over.
At Wilbraham Primary School on Platt Lane in Fallowfield, the nursery offers 90 full-time places each academic year. Children must have turned three before joining. Two classes, NP and NBT, make up the nursery, with teachers and teaching assistants working across the provision. This is the school's own nursery, with a September intake.
Practical skills sit alongside language and early maths. In summer 2026, children practised ball and beanbag throwing and catching, developed their pencil grip and learnt to handle a knife and fork at lunch. These activities connect physical development with things children can use during play and daily routines.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) learning here includes communication, movement, early mathematical ideas and learning to manage feelings. Summer 2026 maths work used the morning routine and nursery rhymes to explore sequencing. Children also explored shapes, including cylinders and triangles, and words for position, such as behind and under. Familiar routines gave those ideas a practical setting.
Think Equal lessons supported conversations about emotions, while TALK boards helped children speak up. Sharing and turn-taking were also part of the summer learning. Outdoors, water play brought a reason to keep spare clothes ready.
At the September 2022 inspection, Ofsted found that early-years staff understood children's learning and used opportunities to build language. Children enjoyed stories and participated eagerly in songs and rhymes. The emphasis was on listening and joining in.
Settling is discussed with each family, with the child's interests guiding the plan. Attendance begins part time, then increases towards full time, usually over four weeks. Parents who would like to remain with their child while they settle can discuss this with the class teacher. The temporary shorter days are a settling arrangement rather than an ongoing part-time place.
Self-care also features in learning: tooth brushing and lunchtime cutlery practice were included in summer 2026. Children get opportunities to practise independence in everyday tasks.
For additional needs, the school's SENCO coordinates support from nursery onwards. Teachers adapt learning, and teaching assistants support children individually or in groups. Parents can speak to the class teacher at the day's end or arrange a meeting through the office. Educational caseworkers coordinate Early Help meetings, giving families another route into support. Safeguarding concerns can be raised with designated officers through welfare@wilbrahamprimary.com, including during school holidays.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place at Wilbraham. Families must make a separate online application through Manchester School Admissions and submit it before the application deadline. This applies even when a child already attends the nursery.
Preparation for the change is a separate matter. In summer 2026, nursery children talked about moving to Reception, their feelings and what might change or remain familiar. That makes the transition something to discuss, rather than simply a new class to start.
Full-time pattern. Ongoing part-time nursery places are not offered. Families choosing this provision need to plan for full-time attendance after settling.
