Reading, conversation and growing independence give Abbey's early learning its direction. Foundation 1 is the nursery provision within Abbey Primary School in Forest Town, Mansfield, with a teaching team that includes a Foundation Stage One lead teacher and teaching assistants.
The school aims to combine curiosity with confidence and resilience. For parents, that means the nursery's educational purpose extends beyond learning facts: communicating ideas, listening to others and becoming more independent are also part of the ambition.
The Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum shapes this first stage of education. Abbey designs its curriculum around that framework alongside its primary curriculum, with the school aiming to develop children's learning through connected experiences. Spoken language has a clear purpose: children are encouraged to explain their thinking and engage with other people. Conversation is part of learning, rather than simply something that happens between activities.
Daily reading teaching begins in the Foundation Stage. Abbey gives reading priority and aims for children to enjoy books as well as acquire the skills to read them. That places an early encounter with reading within the regular learning pattern. Vocabulary receives explicit attention too, reflecting the school's aim that unfamiliar words should not become obstacles to understanding.
The school uses its outdoor learning environment for practical experiences, linking learning with wellbeing. Its wider curriculum approach also connects new knowledge with things children have already encountered. The intention is cumulative learning: familiar ideas provide a starting point for something new. For a parent considering Foundation 1, the defining emphasis is therefore on language, reading and building understanding over time.
Foundation 1 has a lead teacher and teaching assistants within the Foundation Stage team. An EYFS phase lead also sits within senior leadership, giving early education a leadership role as well as a classroom team.
Support roles across the school include a special educational needs coordinator and an attendance and family support worker. These are distinct responsibilities: additional learning needs and support for families each have an identified role. Abbey describes trust and respect in relationships as central to its approach, and aims for children to develop kindness and inclusion alongside independence.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline.
For Abbey, the route is Nottinghamshire County Council's online application process, in the autumn term before a child becomes eligible for full-time school. Families unable to use the online form can apply by telephone. Treat this as a separate task even while your child is attending Foundation 1.
