Autumn treasures gathered at Pleasley Pit Country Park become collage materials back in class. That gives a concrete flavour of Anthony Bek’s nursery: practical exploration, children’s interests and plenty of conversation shape the learning.
Part of Anthony Bek Community Primary School in Pleasley, the nursery admits children at the beginning of the term in which they turn three. Its teaching team includes a nursery teacher who also leads the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), alongside nursery teaching assistants. In the inspection document published on 16 June 2026, Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision to meet the Strong standard. This is an early years judgement within the school inspection, rather than a separate nursery rating.
Play carries much of the learning, with more structured activities introduced as the year progresses. The EYFS approach here connects children’s development with practical experiences: adults follow their interests while also leading phonics, maths and topic activities. Children therefore have opportunities to explore their own ideas alongside learning guided by staff.
A two-year planning cycle provides broad themes rather than tightly fixed topics. Magical Me and Awe and Wonder appear in both plans; one includes Everyday Superheroes, while the other includes All Creatures Great and Small. These themes leave room for children’s curiosity to influence what happens next.
The autumn outing to Pleasley Pit Country Park included searching for seasonal objects, collecting them and later using them for collages. Outdoor discovery becomes something children can examine and create with indoors. Language receives close attention too. The June 2026 early years findings describe adults extending conversations during play and planned activities, demonstrating language and encouraging children to try unfamiliar vocabulary. Children made substantial progress in communication, including those starting with considerable difficulties.
Settling begins before the first nursery session. In the preceding term, families take part in a meeting at school, a home visit and transition visits. That gives children and parents several points of contact before the new routine begins.
Parents can follow observations through Parent Share within Evidence Me, and contribute photographs or notes about achievements at home. Staff also use OTrack for assessment. Parents’ evenings take place twice a year, with learning and next steps discussed; families can also raise development questions with staff between meetings. For nursery questions or concerns, the class contact is Nursery@anthonybek.derbyshire.sch.uk.
The June 2026 early years findings describe warm adult interactions, routines that help children settle, and effective support enabling children with additional needs to join learning and play. Assessment informs the activities planned for each child’s next steps. The school’s SEND framework also identifies possible specialist input from the Autism Outreach Team and Speech and Language Therapy Service, linking classroom support with outside expertise where needed.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal school admissions route, through Derbyshire County Council. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as two distinct decisions.
Both 15-hour and 30-hour places depend on availability. Morning sessions run from 8:30am to 11:30am daily; afternoon sessions run from 12:30pm to 3:30pm. The full-day pattern is 9am to 3pm, with an extension to 8:30am to 3:30pm through additional paid hours. Ask the school for current charges for that extension.
For nursery registration, collect an admission form from the school reception desk or print it and return it there. Admission enquiries go to enquiries@anthonybek.derbyshire.sch.uk, or telephone 01623 810355. Session availability. Both attendance patterns are conditional on space, so establish the offered pattern before organising childcare around it.
Children can join at the start of the term in which they turn three: September, January or after the Easter holiday.
Subject to availability, 15-hour places offer mornings from 8:30am to 11:30am or afternoons from 12:30pm to 3:30pm. The 30-hour day runs from 9am to 3pm, with additional paid hours extending it to 8:30am to 3:30pm.
A parent meeting, home visit and school transition visits take place in the term before the child starts.
