Nursery rhymes, carefully selected stories and adults who build on children's speech give Asquith's nursery a clear focus: learning to communicate. Foundation 1 is the nursery provision within Asquith Primary School in Mansfield, taking children from the term after their third birthday. Funding covers three- and four-year-olds. In the Ofsted inspection report dated 10 March 2026, early years met the Expected standard. That judgement covers the school's early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Language shapes the learning. In March 2026, adults demonstrated clear speech and helped children expand what they said, while chosen books and nursery rhymes developed vocabulary. For a child still finding the words to express a need or explain an idea, those everyday exchanges matter. Early reading also receives attention, alongside both large movements and smaller hand movements.
The early years foundation stage (EYFS) here gives attention to communication, physical development and children's social and emotional skills. Staff check development and use what they learn to decide the next steps for individual children. Learning follows children's stage of development.
Indoor and outdoor areas belong to the F1 unit. In March 2026, the learning environment was organised to suit children at different developmental stages. Nursery children also shared a classroom with Reception for some of the day, making mixed-age use of the space a practical part of nursery life. Early years children learned routines promptly and paid close attention to adults, helping them take part in learning.
The team includes a nursery teacher who leads the provision, a senior teaching assistant and cover for planning, preparation and assessment time. In March 2026, staff assessed early years needs accurately, and leaders sought help promptly from outside professionals when children required it. Parents were encouraged to participate in their children's education and school life.
Sleep and changing received careful attention, including during the periods when the classroom was shared with Reception. Children's welfare needs were handled well in March 2026. For children staying all day, lunch can be brought from home or bought as a school dinner, giving families a choice over the midday meal.
Attending Asquith's nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Nursery admission and Reception admission are separate: families must apply again through the normal Reception process by its normal deadline. Treat the nursery decision and the later school application as two distinct steps.
In March 2026, nursery children shared a classroom with Reception for parts of the day. This shared use of space did not confer an admissions entitlement or guarantee a later place.
Morning nursery runs from 8:40am to 11:40am, with the afternoon running from 12:30pm to 3:30pm. Lunch occupies the interval from 11:40am to 12:30pm. These separate blocks matter when planning care around work and collection.
The 15-hour funded entitlement is for three- and four-year-olds, Monday to Friday in school terms. A 30-hour option for eligible families was introduced from September 2022. Its code can be requested before a child turns three, but used only from the following term; renewal is required every three months. Children attending F1 all day incur a lunch-supervision charge, and school dinners are charged separately. Contact the school for current charges.
