Dough Disco, outdoor learning and space for children’s own choices give Farmilo’s nursery day its character. Foundation 1, also called F1, is the nursery provision within Farmilo Primary School and Nursery on Woburn Lane in Mansfield. Entry is from 3 years old, in the term after the third birthday where eligible.
Children have time to choose their learning alongside activities directed by a teacher. Outdoor learning features in both parts of that pattern, so activity outside sits alongside adult guidance and children’s independent exploration. Dough Disco adds another named activity to the mix.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) approach uses Development Matters, the DFE 2012 version, to guide planning and assessment. In nursery, the emphasis falls on communication, physical development and children’s personal and social development. For parents, that means listening and speaking, movement and self-care, and learning to manage feelings and relationships are central to the learning programme.
Exploration matters alongside perseverance. Farmilo’s approach encourages children to try things, stay involved and develop ideas of their own. The implication is a curriculum concerned with how children learn as well as the activities they complete.
Within the Foundation Stage unit, provision includes construction, books and creative activities. Sand, water and small-world areas sit alongside music, role play and opportunities for writing and fine motor work. These give children several ways to explore materials, make things and express ideas.
Learning can continue at home through optional F1 activities. Examples include making a kite, looking for minibeasts, telling a story with a sock puppet and listening for sounds around the home. A no-cook playdough recipe supports Dough Disco at home, while PhonicsPlay provides interactive phonics practice. These are suggestions, with no obligation to complete them.
Handwashing and snack form part of the F1 routine, bringing everyday care into the session alongside learning.
For children with special educational needs or disabilities (SEND), Farmilo aims to make learning inclusive and works with families and other professionals. The school sees cooperation between parents, staff and children as a way to address barriers. Nottinghamshire’s Local Offer provides families with information about services beyond school, giving them a further route to understand possible support.
Attending Farmilo’s nursery neither guarantees a Reception place nor gives admission priority. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline.
For the 2025 to 2026 admissions cycle, Nottinghamshire residents applied through Nottinghamshire County Council’s School Admissions Hub, with a closing date of 15 January. Families living elsewhere applied through their home local authority. Treat the nursery choice and the later school application as two separate decisions.
F1 has morning and afternoon sessions. Nursery applications go through the school office, with parents or carers requesting a place on the waiting list.
The office can be contacted on 01623 480107 or at office7@farmilo.notts.sch.uk. Families can also arrange a school tour, providing an opportunity to discuss their nursery enquiry in person.
