At a Glance

Rhythm, rhyme and outdoor stages give Sutton Road’s nursery a distinct musical thread. Monster Phonics Phase 1 introduces children to sounds through voices, instruments and body percussion, linking early learning with singing and storytelling. This is the school’s Foundation 1 provision, within Sutton Road Primary School on Moor Lane in Mansfield, with nursery education for three- and four-year-olds.

The Nursery Day

Morning and afternoon sessions each have their own timetable. Within the early years foundation stage (EYFS), learning includes exploring the surrounding world, creative expression and early drawing. These are practical starting points: noticing changes in the weather, experimenting with marks and listening to different sounds.

Monster Phonics Phase 1 gives the nursery’s sound work a named structure. Children explore sounds in their surroundings as well as those made by voices and instruments; rhyme, rhythm and body percussion are part of this work. Instruments also accompany stories and nursery rhymes. That gives listening practice a place in familiar activities, rather than limiting it to a separate lesson.

Outdoor space carries some of the music-making too. The early years outdoor areas have instruments and stages where children can perform, giving them a physical place to turn sounds into creative play. Music also runs through daily routines and activities children can access during the session.

Drawing begins with mark-making in EYFS. Geography learning connects Mathematics with Understanding of the World: children investigate their surroundings and explore changes in seasons, weather and places. Physical activities in the local environment also introduce language associated with what children are exploring. Together, these examples show learning through doing, alongside opportunities to talk about the world around them.

Care and Support

Children with special educational needs and disabilities are welcomed within the mainstream primary and nursery provision. The school’s support covers communication, learning, behaviour and social and emotional needs, with staff, families and support services working together. Families can contact the Inclusion Team through the office or at SRSEN@suttonroad.org, providing a direct route for discussing additional needs.

Across the school, Emotion Coaching helps children understand and reflect on their behaviour, while Zones of Regulation is used for emotional control and self-regulation. These are school approaches rather than a description of an individual nursery child’s support plan. Their practical focus is helping children recognise feelings and work towards managing them.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place and gives no priority within the admission criteria. Families must make a separate school application. For children living in Nottinghamshire, the route is through Nottinghamshire County Council, including when applying to schools outside the county.

For September 2027 Reception entry, the application deadline is Friday 15 January 2027. Keep that application separate from nursery registration: the nursery waiting-list process runs through the school office. Catchment and sibling circumstances feature in the school admission criteria, so being part of the nursery does not replace the normal allocation process.

Practical Information

The morning session runs from 8.30am to 11.30am; the afternoon runs from 12.15pm to 3.15pm. The daily timetable may change. These distinct collection times matter when organising work or coordinating another child’s school day.

All three- and four-year-olds have an entitlement to 15 funded hours of nursery education across 38 weeks. The school follows Nottinghamshire County Council term dates, with additional INSET days, so families should include those closures in their childcare planning.

Nursery registration can be completed online or using a form from the school office. Contact office@suttonroad.org or telephone 01623 455920. School visits can also be arranged through the office, giving families an opportunity to look around before deciding.
