Daily outdoor play and a new topic each term give Burbage Preschool its shape. This is Burbage Primary School’s own preschool in the village of Burbage, with children starting from age 2. Play leads the activities, and the connection with school begins well before the Reception application.
The early years provision received a Strong standard judgement in Ofsted’s report dated 24 February 2026. That judgement covers the school’s early years, including preschool, rather than a separate nursery inspection. Its practical strengths include attention to language and activities adapted to children’s development.
Indoor activities and outdoor play are available daily. Messy activities are part of the picture too: children need clothes suited to the day and a spare outfit, kept in a named bag on their peg in the entrance hall. This makes practical clothing more useful than anything parents want to keep spotless.
A different topic each term provides a focus for activities intended to extend children’s understanding of different subjects. Families can follow that theme through pictures on Tapestry and the topic display in the lobby, giving them something specific to talk about at home.
The early years foundation stage here builds communication, movement and social skills alongside the beginnings of reading. In February 2026, language was a clear priority across early years: adults introduced vocabulary, supported conversation and combined planned phonics work with play directed by children. Learning therefore includes both adult guidance and children’s own choices. Consistent routines help children revisit learning and develop confidence in activities.
Contact with staff fits around each session. Parents can pass on information at the beginning or end, including a poor night’s sleep or a minor injury. Regular parents’ evenings provide time to discuss progress; appointments with the preschool manager or school office allow longer conversations.
With parental permission, children receive a Tapestry account when they join. Photos and activity reports are added regularly, and parents can respond with comments. Weekly school newsletters cover forthcoming events, so communication combines individual updates with information for the wider school community.
In February 2026, early years staff adjusted resources and activities to individual developmental needs, with support for disadvantaged children and those with special educational needs and/or disabilities beginning in preschool. Adults also helped young children understand emotions and work through disagreements. For children using nappies, families supply nappies, wipes and any cream needed for their booked stay.
Attending Burbage Preschool does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process by the applicable deadline. Treat choosing preschool and applying for school as two distinct decisions.
Preparation for that next step happens through learning. In February 2026, early years children developed communication, physical and social skills that supported readiness for Reception. That educational preparation is separate from the allocation of school places.
Preschool operates during term time, Monday to Friday, between 9am and 3pm. Morning sessions run from 9am to noon; afternoons run from 1pm to 3pm. The noon-to-1pm lunch period can extend either a morning or an afternoon booking.
Children must be signed in and out for each session. A different collector needs parental authorisation, and an emergency password arrangement supports collection checks. Late collection charges apply after 5 minutes; contact staff promptly if delayed. Preschool polo shirts and sweatshirts can be purchased, while clothing and shoes should carry the child’s name.
For enquiries or to arrange a tour, contact the school office on 01672 810452 or admin@burbage.excalibur.org.uk. Ask the school for current charges before booking.
