A compact harbour town of around 11,000 on the Solway Firth in Cumbria, Maryport grew from a new port at the mouth of the River Ellen in the mid-eighteenth century, built to carry coal from the northern end of the Cumberland Coalfield. Its history reaches back much further. Roman Alauna occupied the same ground in the second century, and traces of the fort remain within the parish today.
Maryport and the inland village of Dearham draw families competing for primary places in this part of Cumbria, with Flimby on the coastal strip providing a further residential option. The Cumbrian Coast Line connects the town to Carlisle in around forty minutes.
