Schools in Whitehaven

That prosperity built a compact town. Over 170 listed Georgian buildings survive around the harbour and Whitehaven town centre, making it one of Cumbria's most architecturally coherent settlements on the north-west coast.

Once the second busiest port in England by tonnage, Whitehaven reached its commercial peak between 1750 and 1772, when ships owned by the Lowther family worked the Georgian harbour and traded with the American colonies. Hensingham and Kells, to the south and east of the centre, are among the most school-competitive corners of west Cumbria for families seeking primary places, while Jericho sits within the older inner town. Around 24,000 people live across the parish, and the Cumbrian Coast railway line links Whitehaven northward to Carlisle in around an hour and a half.
