Daily reading and routines that build independence characterised Montagu Academy’s early years provision at the September 2022 inspection. This is three-year-old provision within a primary academy on Park Road in Mexborough, with capacity for 78 nursery places. It is part of the school’s early years provision, rather than a separate nursery establishment.
Ofsted judged early years provision Good at the September 2022 inspection. That judgement covers the school’s early years stage; it should not be read as a separate inspection of the nursery alone.
Reading provides a daily thread. In September 2022, children in early years regularly encountered reading alongside teaching across other curriculum areas, with staff expecting children to achieve and persevere. Everyday routines helped children become more independent and develop resilience. For parents, the emphasis is on learning to manage familiar tasks as well as acquiring knowledge.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings learning and care together for children aged zero to five. Its learning areas encompass language, movement and social development alongside mathematics, literacy, creative expression and learning about the world. This gives families a broader way to think about progress than early reading alone: communicating needs and developing physical skills count too.
Across the academy, the building is single storey and has ramped access. Those physical arrangements matter for families whose children need help accessing school spaces.
Support for special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) uses Assess, Plan, Do, Review. Parents and staff agree a support plan, discuss any appropriate referrals and consider how learning can continue at home. Visual prompts are one possible resource. The process gives families a role in deciding what help their child needs and reviewing how it works.
Where a child needs a Graduated Response SEND Support Plan, targets are reviewed at least termly, with parents contributing. Possible adjustments include visual timetables, practical learning resources and help from a Learning Support Assistant. These are options matched to need, rather than a fixed package for each child.
A relevant caution comes from September 2022: across some school subjects, support for children with SEND and lower prior attainment needed greater precision to help them build on earlier learning. This was a school-wide improvement point, rather than a finding specifically about nursery care.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal admissions route by the applicable deadline.
For the 2025/26 entry cycle, applications followed Doncaster’s coordinated admissions scheme. Nursery attendance conferred no priority: the criteria covered children in care or previously in care, catchment residence, siblings and distance. A sibling attending only nursery did not count. Families should treat the nursery choice and the Reception application as separate decisions.
For children with SEND moving between classes, support information is handed to the next teacher. Children can spend time learning with their new teacher in the next classroom, with extra transition visits arranged where needed. Familiarisation supports the change; it does not determine admission.
