At a Glance

Children’s interests shape the learning here, with indoor and outdoor provision changed to follow what catches their attention. Windhill’s Nursery, also called Foundation 1, sits within the primary school on Hollingworth Close in Mexborough, alongside a distinct Pre-school provision.

Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good following its inspection on 12 and 13 July 2022. This judgement covers early years across the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.

The Nursery Day

The Early Excellence Centre helped develop Windhill’s Foundation Stage curriculum. Its approach uses continuous provision: learning opportunities remain available for children to explore, with changes made around their interests. Indoor and outdoor learning both belong to this approach, giving children different settings in which to pursue their ideas.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework and Development Matters guide the curriculum. Children learn through experiences, with provision adapted around their interests. Nursery planning includes the autumn topic All about me, followed by People who help us in spring. These give learning a starting point in children’s own lives and the people around them.

Books have a physical place in the day. Each class has a reading area, with time for children to enjoy books. That gives reading a space alongside the other learning opportunities.

In July 2022, children across the early years settings were happy and interacted positively with adults and one another. The curriculum was carefully planned, but opportunities to develop writing were limited across early years. Early writing. This was a specific weakness, so families should keep writing development in view alongside the emphasis on exploration and children’s interests.

Care and Support

Class Dojo connects classroom learning with home through messages, photographs, videos and portfolios. Parents can request access through their child’s teacher. It gives families a way to follow learning and maintain contact beyond conversations at school.

For additional needs, the school provides a SEN Information Report and links families to the Doncaster Council Local Offer, covering education, health and social care services. The SEND contact is senco@windhillschool.co.uk, giving parents a direct route for discussing support.

Safeguarding arrangements include annual staff training and a team parents can contact with concerns. Families are asked to raise worries promptly with staff. Milk uses the school’s Cool Milk registration arrangement; children receiving Free School Meals must still be registered to receive their free milk.

Moving On to Reception

Attending Windhill’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. Doncaster Local Authority coordinates the school’s admissions, and the school directs parents to Doncaster Admissions Service. Treat the nursery choice and the Reception application as separate decisions.

Practical Information

The school office can be reached on 01709 586949 or at admin@windhillschool.co.uk. Nursery admissions enquiries are directed to Doncaster Council Nursery Admissions; the local authority’s admissions team also accepts enquiries at admissions@doncaster.gov.uk.

Visits to the school can be arranged by telephone. Disabled parking and access throughout the school are provided, useful practical details for families planning a visit. Doncaster school term dates are linked through the school’s term-date page, with training days communicated separately.
