Morning and afternoon sessions give Abingdon’s nursery a clear half-day rhythm. This is the nursery provision within Abingdon Primary School on Abingdon Road, Middlesbrough, with a key person assigned to each early years child. That gives families an identified member of staff within the early years team.
The school’s aims place children’s languages, cultures and family traditions alongside learning. For parents, that emphasis matters: the curriculum is intended to recognise what children bring from home, as well as what they learn at school.
The nursery timetable separates morning and afternoon attendance, each with its own opening and collection window. Families can plan around a shorter session rather than assume that the nursery follows the main school’s day.
Within the school’s curriculum, developing spoken language is an explicit aim. Abingdon also aims to build children’s knowledge and experiences while recognising their cultural backgrounds. These are school-wide aims that frame the nursery’s place within the school.
Learning can be adjusted to a child’s needs. Across the school, teachers can change the environment, introduce supportive resources or arrange additional adult help. For children who need adaptations, this means support can involve changing how learning happens, rather than simply adding another task. Planning can also change daily where a child’s needs require it.
Physical access includes an accessible ground floor and surrounding play areas. The nursery has an accessible toilet. These practical features matter for children whose participation depends on suitable access and care facilities.
Before children join nursery, every parent is invited to welcome meetings and sessions where they stay and play. These give families an opportunity to become familiar with the setting before attendance begins. The key-person arrangement provides a further point of continuity once a child starts.
SEND support includes an early years phase SENDCO, alongside the school’s wider SEND team. Parents’ observations contribute to identifying needs, and concerns about progress lead to a meeting to discuss support and possible professional referrals. Targets are reviewed with parents at least once each term, giving families a regular role in planning.
Specialist services used by the school include Speech and Language Therapy and the Early Years Specialist Support Service. Referrals to specialist professionals involve parental permission. Families can therefore contribute both their knowledge of the child and their agreement to the next steps.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. It also confers no priority under the arrangements for 2027-2028. Families must make a separate Reception application through Middlesbrough Council’s common admissions form; choosing the nursery does not replace that application.
For children with SEND moving between classes, staff pass information to the next teacher and usually hold a planning meeting. Extra visits can be arranged, with classroom photographs, social stories or a supporting book where helpful. These preparations address the child’s experience of change, separately from the admissions decision.
Morning nursery doors open between 8:30am and 8:45am. The session finishes at 11:15am, with doors closing at 11:30am. Afternoon doors open between 12:15pm and 12:30pm; the session ends at 3:00pm and doors close at 3:15pm. Keep the session finish and final door-closing time distinct when planning collection.
Contact the school office on 01642 210567 or email abingdon@abingdonprimary.org.uk for nursery enquiries. To discuss additional educational needs, the office can arrange a meeting with the SEND team.
