Around 148,000 people call the borough home.
Founded in 1830 as a planned coal-shipping port on the River Tees, Middlesbrough grew within a generation from a bare riverbank into North Yorkshire's largest industrial town. Linthorpe and Acklam are the borough's most school-competitive residential areas, stretching south of the town centre through Victorian and inter-war streets. Coulby Newham draws families competing for primary places on the town's newer southern edge, and has grown into one of the borough's larger residential districts. Nunthorpe and Hemlington extend the residential fringe beyond the urban core, with calmer surroundings popular with families. Rail services from Middlesbrough station connect into the TransPennine Express network, with journeys reaching Leeds in around an hour and Newcastle in around forty minutes.
