Nursery rhymes, first maps and three-hour sessions give Berwick Hills’ early years provision its character: language and learning about the local world sit alongside a manageable session length. The nursery belongs to Berwick Hills Primary School on Westerdale Road in Middlesbrough, with a separate provision for two-year-olds as well as the main nursery.
Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 14 and 15 November 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating. For parents, the relevant findings concern children’s relationships with adults, communication and the foundations for later learning.
A morning session runs from 8.30am to 11.30am, while the afternoon runs from 12.15pm to 3.15pm. Both the two-year-old provision and the main nursery use these times. Each offers a defined morning or afternoon block, giving families clear start and collection points around which to organise the day.
Within early years, learning starts with communication. In November 2023, children were introduced promptly to songs and nursery rhymes, with spoken language receiving close attention. These familiar forms give young children words and sounds to practise as they begin learning.
Exploring the local area also has a learning purpose. Early years children learn geographical terms and begin to understand maps, connecting new vocabulary with places around them. This makes the foundations for later lessons concrete: children are learning how to describe and represent their surroundings, rather than simply memorising words.
Positive adult relationships supported early years children’s development in November 2023. For a young child beginning education, those relationships matter alongside the learning itself: adults provide the personal connection through which children can gain confidence.
Support for additional needs sits within the school’s wider team. The deputy head also holds the SENCO role, and the SENCO meets families, staff and other professionals to discuss individual needs. Teaching assistants support children in groups or individually. Speech therapy, occupational therapy and educational psychology are among the specialist services that may become involved, giving families several possible routes of support according to their child’s needs.
The Family Services Lead offers individual support, home visits and help with appointments involving other agencies. This gives parents a school contact for difficulties affecting family life as well as their child’s education.
Attending this nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal school admissions route, managed by the Middlesbrough School Admissions Team. Treat choosing a nursery session and applying for school as two distinct decisions.
Nursery applications go directly to the school, including applications for the two-year-old provision. Contact the school office on 01642 245598 or email office@berwickhills.org.uk for nursery enquiries and application information.
Session timing. Morning and afternoon sessions have different collection times. Match the chosen session to the adult who will handle collection and the family’s daily commitments.
