Three-hour sessions give Breckon Hill’s nursery a clear morning or afternoon shape. This is the nursery within Breckon Hill Primary School on Breckon Hill Road, Middlesbrough, with a teaching role covering two-year-olds and nursery children and teaching assistants working across the early years team.
The nursery belongs to The Legacy Learning Trust school. For families, the practical distinction is between joining this early years provision and applying later for a school place: they are separate decisions.
Mornings run from 8.30am until 11.30am; afternoon sessions begin at 12.15pm and finish at 3.15pm. Each session therefore occupies one part of the day, giving parents specific collection times to plan around.
The school building is on a single level. Its accessibility features include ramps, doors operated by a push button, accessible toilets and changing facilities. These are school-wide features, relevant to families considering how their child will access the setting.
Settling starts before nursery entry, with parents invited to stay and play sessions. That gives families an opportunity to spend time in the setting before their child starts. Concerns can also be discussed with the class teacher or the special educational needs co-ordinator (SENDCO), with meetings arranged through the office.
For early years children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), the school plans to identify emerging difficulties early, listen to parents and monitor development. Support follows an assess, plan, do, review cycle: needs are considered, help is agreed and put into practice, then its effect is reviewed. Parents are informed when special educational provision is made for their child.
Across the school, support can involve individual work or small groups, depending on the child’s needs. Speech and Language Therapy and the Early Years Specialist Support Service are among the outside services involved in specialist provision. This gives families routes to discuss help beyond the classroom team. Breckon Hill is also a nut-free school, a practical consideration when preparing anything to bring from home.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. For the 2027-2028 admission year, it gives no priority under the oversubscription criteria. Families must make a separate application through Middlesbrough Council using the common admissions form, by the deadline for their child’s entry year.
Preparation for a new class is a separate matter. Information about a child is passed to the next teacher ahead of the move, and extra visits can be arranged where needed. For a child anxious about changing class, photographs, social stories or a book can help explain what will happen. These arrangements support familiarity; they do not change how Reception places are allocated.
The nursery uniform is a pale blue cardigan or jumper. Nursery enquiries go through the school office on 01642 243044, which also arranges appointments for families to see the school and meet staff.
Paper copies of term dates can be obtained from the office. For parents balancing nursery with other commitments, the morning finish of 11.30am and afternoon finish of 3.15pm are the key times to build into collection plans.
