Songs and counting games give Caedmon’s nursery its character: children learn rhymes, sing together and begin exploring numbers through practical activity. This is nursery provision within Caedmon Primary School on Attlee Road in Grangetown, Middlesbrough. The morning nursery has 39 places, with entry from a child’s third birthday. Separate provision also accepts eligible two-year-olds, including children whose parents receive qualifying benefits and those from eligible working families.
Ofsted graded early years provision Good at the inspection on 23 and 24 January 2024. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Rhymes and songs are part of nursery learning, helping children prepare for later phonics teaching. In January 2024, early years children used Five Little Speckled Frogs to explore numbers: they removed frogs, counted those remaining and practised finding one less. The activity gives an abstract idea a concrete form. Children can see the quantity change as they count.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) includes development in communication, movement and children’s personal and social skills. In parent language, that means learning to communicate, developing physical skills and managing relationships and feelings. Squiggle while you wiggle is another named early years activity at Caedmon. Alongside these experiences, staff teach the daily routines and expectations; in January 2024, children were adapting to those routines quickly.
Before a child starts nursery, families are offered a visit to meet staff and explore the setting together. Stay and play afternoons also let parents and children spend time with the team, join in play and have refreshments. These offer a chance to build familiarity before the first nursery session.
Support for additional needs begins early. Nursery staff can draw on information from health professionals following a two-year developmental check and start an individual programme when needed. EYFS staff check developmental milestones at points across the year. For children with SEND, termly meetings bring parents and teachers together to review progress and agree targets, giving families a regular role in decisions about support.
The school building is on one level, with wheelchair access across the building and playgrounds. An accessible toilet includes a changing table, providing a practical facility for children who need help with personal care.
Attending nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Parents must make a separate formal application through Redcar and Cleveland’s primary admissions route. Nursery attendance gives no priority under the 2026/27 oversubscription criteria.
Preparation for the next classroom is a separate matter. Children visit Reception for play and stories, try small assemblies and experience school lunches and routines. Parents also attend short information meetings. For some children with SEND, extra transition visits and meetings can be arranged, helping staff and families prepare for individual needs.
