At a Glance

Cheese straws, puddle splashing and a teddy bear’s picnic give Grangetown’s nursery its own character. These are among the experiences children encounter through 5 Things to do, a programme that makes room for childhood activities alongside the curriculum. Play has a clear purpose here.

The nursery belongs to Grangetown Primary School on St George’s Road, Middlesbrough. Children join the Nursery part time as soon as possible after turning three. The school also had provision for two-year-olds at its January 2024 inspection. Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good on 30 and 31 January 2024; that judgement covers early years within the school.

The Nursery Day

The Curiosity Approach shapes learning through play. Natural materials with multiple possible uses give children scope to decide what to do, rather than follow a single prescribed outcome. The school aims to encourage experimentation and independent thinking through experiences children can relate to. Children’s choices sit alongside activities initiated or led by adults.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) puts early development into a learning framework. Grangetown gives priority to language and communication, movement, and children’s emotional and social development. In parent terms, learning to express an idea, manage feelings and use the body matters alongside early academic learning. Adults observe children’s learning and record it through individual learning journeys and floor books, helping them respond to children’s interests and starting points.

Conversation is a concrete strength. In January 2024, adults in early years used interactions to demonstrate accurate language and extend children’s vocabulary. That makes ordinary exchanges part of learning. Nursery experiences also include creating a bird feeder and brushing a horse’s hair, giving children practical encounters with materials and animals.

The January 2024 whole-school curriculum finding included a concern about insufficient challenge in some subjects. It is a school-wide improvement point, rather than a finding specifically assigned to nursery teaching.

Care and Support

Stay and play sessions brought parents into early years in January 2024. They provide a way for families to share children’s learning experiences. An EYFS SENCO role sits within the staffing structure, giving early years a specific point of responsibility for special educational needs and disabilities.

Families can arrange a conversation with the school SENDCO about their child. Wider family support comes through the pastoral team, which can help with clothing, food supplies and household essentials. This is practical help for pressures beyond the classroom. The Pastoral Manager is the first contact for that support.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal local authority process and meet its deadline. Redcar and Cleveland manages the allocation, with one September intake each year. Treat the nursery choice and the Reception application as separate decisions: being familiar with the school does not secure admission.

Practical Information

Nursery entry is on a part-time basis. For enquiries about the school or admissions, call 01642 455278. The school office can also be contacted at office@grangetown.steelriver.org.uk. Families seeking SEND support can use the same telephone number to arrange an appointment with the SENDCO.
