Stories and books give Ormesby's early years provision its clearest character: language development centres on enjoying them. The nursery belongs to Ormesby Primary School at Henry Taylor Court in Middlesbrough, where the school's age range begins at three. Early years provision was graded Good by Ofsted following the inspection on 10 and 11 April 2024. That judgement covers the school's early years provision.
Two three-hour sessions shape the nursery day. Morning children attend from 8.45am to 11.45am; the afternoon runs from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. For families, those distinct finishing times are the practical starting point for planning care around a session.
Within the early years foundation stage (EYFS), stories and books are used to develop children's language. The emphasis connects enjoying a story with learning to communicate, giving books a purpose beyond listening quietly. In April 2024, children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) received skilled adult help to learn the early years curriculum. Support therefore concerns their learning as well as their care.
Settling begins with a visit together: parents accompany their child to school before nursery entry. Extra visits and further support can be arranged where needed, allowing the introduction to respond to the individual child rather than relying on a single meeting.
Parents can raise concerns about additional needs with the class teacher or contact the SEND coordinator at sendco@ormesby.org.uk. Where a SEND Support Plan is needed, it records the extra help a child will receive; families receive a copy and discuss it with the teacher. Reviews take place at least termly. Speech and Language Therapy referrals require parental consent, giving families a direct role in decisions about specialist involvement.
Physical access includes ramps, doors that are wide throughout the building and adapted toilets for disabled users. These are school facilities, useful considerations for families whose child needs help accessing the building. Staff training includes Paediatric First Aid and Autism in the Early Years.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Parents must make a separate application through the normal local authority process by the deadline for their child's entry year. Redcar and Cleveland residents apply through their council; families living elsewhere apply through their home authority. Choosing the nursery and applying for Reception are separate decisions.
Preparation for the move is more concrete. Parents are invited to accompany their child for a school lunch, and children spend two days with their next teacher in the new classroom. Additional transition visits can be arranged according to individual needs. These experiences introduce the next stage's people and routines; they do not secure admission.
Morning Nursery runs from 8.45am to 11.45am, and Afternoon Nursery from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. To arrange a school visit, telephone the office on 01642 314430 for an appointment. The office also uses office@ormesby.org.uk.
Uniform applies from Foundation Stage: choose a grey or red jumper, a white shirt, black or grey trousers or a skirt, and sensible black leather shoes. Trainer-style shoes must be entirely black. Clothing in school colours can be bought without a badge, giving families flexibility over where they obtain it.
