Story-led phonics and parents joining Stay and Play give this nursery a clear character: early learning is something children can share with home. St Bernadette’s nursery belongs to the Catholic primary school in Nunthorpe. Children join shortly after their third birthday, and the nursery admission number is 26.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 12 and 13 March 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Play and adult teaching work together. Children take part in activities with the class, in smaller groups and individually, alongside opportunities to choose their own learning. Adults observe what children can do and use those observations to plan their next steps. This gives the day both direction and room for children’s interests.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together seven learning areas. In parent terms, that means developing movement, communication and relationships alongside early reading and writing, maths, creativity and understanding the world. Learning spaces allow children to explore these areas indoors and outdoors. Topic themes change in response to children’s needs and interests, so learning can build on what engages them.
Books help shape those topics. Staff choose core texts for their language and challenge, then build activities around them. Daily story-time phonics introduces sounds through books and related activities; children return to sounds over the year and connect them with actions. In March 2024, nursery children took pride in learning to write their names, while relationships with adults helped children approach learning positively. These are small, concrete steps towards becoming confident learners.
Tapestry connects learning with home: observations are recorded and shared with parents, who can also see their child’s learning through it. Stay and Play gives nursery families another way to take part, joining activities alongside their children. Together, these offer both updates and direct involvement in learning.
The nursery team keeps in close contact with families. Staffing roles include an EYFS lead responsible for early reading and phonics, plus a nursery teaching assistant who also supervises lunchtime. For children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), the school aims to match education to individual needs. Its SEND support covers identifying needs, parental involvement and specialist services.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the Local Authority Common Application Form, and parents applying to the Catholic school should also complete the Supplementary Information Form. Forms must be returned by the local authority’s closing date.
Treat that application as a separate family task. Familiarity with the nursery and its adults does not remove the need to apply again for Reception.
Morning nursery runs from 8:30am to 11:30am; afternoon nursery runs from 12:15pm to 3:15pm. Each gives families a distinct session to plan around. Both 15-hour and 30-hour places are offered, with enquiries handled by the school office.
A nursery application form can be downloaded, and families can arrange a school visit through the office or enquiries email. Call 01642 310198 to make contact. A visit offers a practical opportunity to discuss joining the nursery and the place you are seeking.
