Stories, rhymes and learning through play shape the early years at St Joseph's Catholic Primary School on Marton Road, Middlesbrough. This is the school's own nursery, within a Catholic primary setting. Its planned nursery admission number for September 2024 was 26; that figure belongs to that intake, rather than describing current vacancies.
Play and first-hand experiences are the starting point. Half-term themes connect learning with stories and rhymes, giving children a shared thread to explore while leaving room to develop their interests. The school aims for children to become independent, confident and enthusiastic about learning.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together movement, communication and emotional development with early literacy, maths, creativity and exploring the world. In parent language, learning to express an idea or manage a relationship matters alongside beginning to understand numbers and words. Indoor and outdoor learning spaces are planned to support these connected areas of development.
In October 2024, Ofsted found that early-years staff supported language, communication and personal development effectively, with strong subject knowledge and thoughtfully arranged learning spaces. Familiar tales, singing and nursery rhymes connected with broader learning. These give young children accessible ways into the curriculum, rather than making learning depend solely on formal tasks.
A nursery teacher forms part of the team, alongside teaching assistants working across EYFS. The school's wider support structure includes a SENCO and a Parent Support Adviser. These roles give families points of contact for additional needs and family support, while the early-years approach recognises parents as partners in children's learning.
The school participates in Operation Encompass. Designated adults receive notifications from Cleveland Police when a child has experienced or witnessed a domestic abuse incident, enabling them to consider that child's needs during the school day. Parents with a safety concern can speak to staff, with reception providing a contact point if they are unsure whom to approach.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place at St Joseph's. Families must make a separate application through the Local Authority Common Application Form. For this Catholic academy, parents should also submit a Supplementary Information Form: omitting it can affect the category used for the application.
Both forms must reach their destination by the local authority's closing date. Parents are responsible for completing the paperwork and providing evidence, and reminders are not sent. Treat the Reception application as a separate task even when a child is already settled in nursery.
Morning nursery runs from 8:30am to 11:30am; the afternoon session is 12:15pm to 3:00pm. Those distinct collection times matter when arranging work and childcare. The school's breakfast and after-school clubs are for Reception to Year 6, so they should not form part of a nursery childcare plan.
A limited number of 30-hour childcare places are offered to eligible families from the term after their child's third birthday. Existing nursery children receive first preference for these places, followed by allocation to the eldest children. An offer depends on the school verifying the HMRC eligibility code.
Bring the validation code, National Insurance number, birth certificate and completed parent-school agreement to the school office. Lunchtime staffing carries an additional charge, paid through ParentPay; contact the school for current charges. Nursery enquiries can go to the office on 01642 819252.
