Play, daily phonics and sensory art give the nursery at St Pius X its character. For children aged 3 and 4, this is an introduction to learning within a Catholic primary school on Amersham Road in Park End, Middlesbrough. There are 52 nursery places, divided into 26 morning and 26 afternoon places.
Ofsted judged the early years provision Good at the inspection on 10 and 11 January 2023. That judgement covers the school's early years provision rather than a separately inspected nursery.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together learning to communicate, move and manage feelings with early reading, mathematics, creative expression and understanding the world. Playing and exploring sit alongside active learning and thinking critically. The emphasis is on how children approach learning as well as what they learn, with adults responding to individual interests and needs.
Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised provides the phonics approach, with daily teaching across EYFS. In January 2023, children in early years enjoyed books, and frequent storytelling and rhymes helped them remember what they heard. Repetition gives familiar language a place in the day.
Practical experiences broaden that early learning. Nursery art begins with sensory exploration and hands-on activity, while early years geography starts with classroom spaces before extending to the school and surrounding community. History introduces the difference between past and present through everyday activities, visitors and books. These are concrete starting points for ideas that become more abstract later.
The inspection also identified unfinished work: in January 2023, newer curriculum units, including some in early years, still needed to be taught and evaluated fully. This qualifies the positive judgement and makes curriculum evaluation an important part of the picture.
An assistant headteacher leads EYFS, and the wider school team includes a SEND coordinator and a parent support advisor. The school aims to keep children with additional needs learning in class wherever possible, using targeted intervention to support participation and social interaction.
Caterlink prepares the school's meals on the premises. Daily choices include jacket potatoes, sandwiches and salad, alongside bread baked on site. Families using 30-hour nursery provision pay a lunchtime staffing charge through ParentPay; contact the school for current charges.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Parents must make a separate application through Middlesbrough Local Authority using its Common Application Form, by the closing date the authority sets. Treat this as a fresh application rather than an automatic continuation.
Families applying to the Catholic academy should also complete a Supplementary Information Form. If applications exceed available places, that information helps determine the oversubscription category; omitting it could affect the category applied to the application. Parents are responsible for submitting the forms and supporting evidence, and reminders are not sent.
The nursery offers 15 hours of free childcare for 3- and 4-year-olds. Up to 12 children can access 30-hour provision, subject to parental eligibility. Eligible families need to give office staff their 11-digit validation code before their child starts.
Morning handovers. Agree the timing before starting: the fixed morning session runs from 8:40am to 11:40am, while the flexible morning arrangement allows drop-off between 8:30am and 8:45am with collection at 11:30am. These arrangements have different collection times, which matters when planning work or travel.
Afternoon sessions run from 12:15pm to 3:00pm, with a flexible collection window extending to 3:15pm. Nursery enquiries and waiting-list requests go to the school office on 01642 314453. Families are welcome to arrange a school visit with their child.
