At a Glance

Marvellous Me, Zoom Zoom Zoom and Bear Necessities give Abbotsbury’s nursery a distinctive set of topic names. This is the nursery within Abbotsbury Primary School on Abbotsbury Road in Morden. Its own class page brings together topic organisers and a welcome video, giving families an introduction to the nursery’s learning themes before their child starts.

The Nursery Day

Topic organisers include Twinkle Twinkle alongside Marvellous Me, Zoom Zoom Zoom and Bear Necessities. These give parents specific themes to connect with, rather than simply a general description of learning through play. They also provide a starting point for conversations between home and nursery about what children are exploring.

Listening and communication are concrete parts of the learning. At the March 2023 inspection, Ofsted observed nursery adults helping children pay closer attention to sounds in music. Early years staff also concentrated on children’s communication. For a young child, this places listening and expressing themselves alongside the activities they take part in.

Musical instruments provided another early years example: adults encouraged respectful handling and playing. The activity therefore combined music with learning how to treat equipment carefully. Additional literacy support also sits within the early years provision: a teaching assistant runs a programme intended to develop younger children’s literacy skills.

Care and Support

Settling begins with contact at home. Nursery staff visit children before they join, creating a connection between the family and the adults who will work with their child. That gives parents an early opportunity to introduce their child in familiar surroundings.

For concerns about development or additional needs, the school identifies the class teacher, EY SEN Lead and Assistant Head for Inclusion as points of contact. Support can involve observations, extra group work and a SEN Support Plan, with targets discussed with parents and ways to continue support at home. This gives families a role in planning support, rather than only receiving updates afterwards.

The school’s SEND arrangements include target reviews at least three times a year. Its SEN information also describes wheelchair access across the school and interpreters for family meetings when needed. These are practical features for families considering access and communication.

Food guidance includes fresh fruit or vegetables for early years children at break time. The school excludes nuts, including peanut butter, and asks children to bring a filled water bottle each day. Families preparing packed lunches should also follow its restrictions on chocolate, sweets and fizzy drinks.

Moving On to Reception

Attending Abbotsbury’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline. Treat the nursery decision and the Reception application as separate steps: joining the nursery must not be taken as securing the next place.

Practical Information

Nursery applications go through the local authority’s admissions department. The nursery information directs families to information about 30-hour and rising 3 places; this should be kept separate from the Reception application.

Visits can be arranged through the school office. For enquiries, call 020 8640 1010 or email abbotsburyprimary@abbotsbury.merton.sch.uk. The office is also a source of pre-loved school uniform, while Stitch Design handles online uniform purchases.
