Nursery at Aragon Primary School

Rhymes, dressing up and a real postbox on Aragon Road give Aragon’s nursery learning a concrete, playful character. Children have taken part in performances for families and explored Diwali through movement and stories. These are experiences that give young children something to talk about, make and share.
The nursery belongs to Aragon Primary School in Morden, with entry after a child’s third birthday. Its 104 places are divided equally between morning and afternoon sessions: 52 in each. That session structure makes the allocation of a morning or afternoon place a practical consideration for family routines.
Learning follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). In parent language, this brings together talking and listening, movement, relationships and emotions, alongside early reading, number work, creative expression and exploration of the world. Aragon uses these connected areas to plan nursery learning, rather than treating preparation for school as reading and maths alone.
Named topics give that learning a recognisable shape. Magical Me begins the autumn sequence, followed by Sparkle and Shine; later themes include We Are Explorers and What a Wonderful World. These provide a framework for activities across the curriculum. The nursery also has Foundations for Phonics as part of its early literacy provision.
World Nursery Rhyme Week in November 2025 included crafts, costumes and a performance for parents and carers. I Hear Thunder and Two Little Dickie Birds were among the songs children performed. Singing, making and performing brought language practice into several different activities, with families sharing the occasion.
A Diwali workshop in October 2025 involved the full-time and afternoon nursery children. Dance, drama and storytelling linked the celebration to Sparkle & Shine. Seasonal learning also reached beyond the classroom: nursery children posted letters in the postbox on Aragon Road during the Christmas period. The physical act of posting gave writing an everyday purpose.
Aragon’s school-wide inclusion approach uses adaptive teaching to respond to individual learning needs. Its 8 R’s include Relationships, Resources and Recall, connecting adult support, suitable materials and opportunities to revisit learning. For nursery families, this places individual needs within a wider school approach rather than treating support as a separate concern.
Parents can contact the SENCO and Inclusion Lead through send@aragon.merton.sch.uk. The Education Wellbeing Practitioner Service also offers a challenging behaviours programme for parents of children aged 3 to 8. It involves 6 to 8 sessions, held at school or through MS TEAMS, and gives parents strategies to try at home. That age range includes nursery children.
Nursery attendance neither guarantees a Reception place nor gives admission priority at Aragon. Parents must submit a separate application through the London Borough of Merton, naming Aragon among their preferences. The application period runs from 1 September to 15 January in the year before the child is due to start. Treat that application as a separate family task, even when your child already attends the nursery.
Nursery applications go directly to Aragon and can be submitted at any time. Families may request a morning or afternoon session, but their preferred session is not guaranteed. Build childcare arrangements around the session actually offered.
For enquiries, email aragon@aragon.merton.sch.uk or telephone 020 8337 0505. Prospective-parent school tours require registration and last approximately sixty minutes; other families may join the same tour. They provide an opportunity to see the school and ask questions before applying.
